This book was written, developed, and class tested at AT&T Bell Laboratories over a nine-year period to instruct and train engineers, scientists, and mathematicians on the intelligent use of the finite element method (FEM). It is also appropriate for undergraduate/graduate students with only an intermediate level calculus background. Its treatment of the FEM as a general numerical analysis technique with problem applications to many different fields of engineering and physical science, not just solid mechanics (e.g., elasticity, plasticity, dynamics) differentiates it from the great number of existing books on the subject.

Too bad it's out print

An excellent introductory text on Finite Elements. One needs only knowledge of basic calculus & differential equations to understand this text. Hardly one can find a book so clearly written. It even explains background materials in details. Draws the connection between physics & math nicely. A copy in one's personal library is highly recommended. I've looked at many introductory texts on this subject - but this is the best one I've found so far. The author wrote it based on his experience from teaching at AT&T labs. The provided Fortran source codes are not necessary in understanding the text.

excellent FEM text

The author has gone to great pains to make the finite element method understandable. Starting from 1D boundary value problems with one element, the general theory is worked out in a careful, readable way.
This book is based on notes for a course taught to other engineers at Bell Labs.
The author states that he has put 1000's of hours into writing this book so the reader won't have to put 1000's of hours into learning the FEM. In short, I believe this is the one of the best written engineering books (on any subject) that I have come across. Note that this book does not overly dwell on structural application of FEA although it has a good chapter focusing on elasticity and structural problems.
If you can find a used copy of this book grab it quick!

This is the best book I could find in my library. Sorry that the author hasn't revealed a new edition. It's so easy to understand. If you read it and practice with Maple or Matlab. It'll take only a few weeks to be able to program FEM. The topic included are 1-D and 2-D problem and can be applied to many fields. This is the best I ever read.

Other books might be better

Updated review: Friedman's book is much better, and cleared up a lot of questions I still had after spending a couple of evenings with White's.
The manual that comes with the camera is awful. I can't understand how anyone new to the DSC-RX camera family could use their camera fully without a 3rd party guide. Sony should be ashamed for not making more information available on line (its OK that its not cost effective to supply a printed manual). This book attempts to cover everything, and then some (appendices about 3rd party cases, batteries, memory cards etc), but the presentation is a bit muddled. If you buy the kindle version, its very cost effective. Can't see many shelling out for the printed version.

Great rx for the RX!

This is a COMPLETE guide (did I already say complete?) to everything there is to know about the camera. I bought it shortly after I got my RX100 III. Everything is explained in an orderly manner and all aspects of the camera are discussed-settings, menus, uses, and so forth accompanied by numerous example photos. Assuming you bought the camera already you will not go wrong with the book. These are not Cliff Notes, but the real deal, in great detail. I read the Owner's Manual twice before I decided to buy this book. Even SONY's Help Guide on line was not especially useful to me. I found it fragmented and jumped from section to section driving me nuts. But here is all the information you will ever need about the RXIII in one place and straight up. You will be amazed how much this camera can do, and what you can do to improve your shooting. No doubt an experienced pro could probably figure out all of this and find what he/she needed in the camera. But some of us, probably most of us, need the level of guidance offered here. I read digital formats mostly, so this Kindle edition is a plus too.

I am so glad I purchased this book

I already had a A6000 book from another author, so when I purchased RX100M3, I was wondering if I needed a book for RX100M3. I am so glad I purchased this book! There is enough difference between the two cameras, and the author does a very nice job explaining each feature that you would not be able to easily figure out just by reading the manual or experiementing. The Kindle price is really a steal.

About the Author
Dr. Pushpa Viswanathan, Professor, Department of Electron Microscopy, Cancer Institute, Chennai, completed her M.Sc. (Biochemistry) in the Faculty of Medicine from Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Pondicherry, and then Ph.D. in Biosciences from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, where she got trained in electron microscopy. She also completed the PGDHM (Post-graduate Diploma in Hospital Management) course offered by the Annamalai University, Chidambaram. She worked as a Research Associate in the Coordination Units of the two All India Integrated Environmental Programmes, one on Heavy Metals and the other on River Kaveri Basin, both sponsored by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. Then she joined the Cancer Institute, Chennai in the Department of Electron Microscopy as Assistant Professor where she is presently a Professor. She has been awarded the title “Fellow of Association of Biomedical Scientists (FABMS)” by the Indian Association of Biomedical Scientists. She has to her credit several presentations, publications and guest lectures. She is a co-editor of the book Toxic Metals in the Indian Environment. At the Cancer Institute, she is regularly conducting the Observership Training Programme in Electron Microscopy for students of Biology, apart from helping post-graduates and research scholars in the ultrastructural studies of their samples.

A must have!

This is a very good book for all who are interested in Transmission Electron and Scanning Electron microscopy.
Great reference- instructions are brief but thorough. I would have expected to pay much more to this text.
Have already referred it students and colleagues.

a very low quality printed version

The content of the book is very good. But the quality of the printed version is the worst. It is like a cheap photocopy of the perhaps original version. The quality of the pictures is totally poor. I expected a book with good paper quality and with decent pictures. I am really disappointed and feel like I was robbed.
I give 0 stars gor this.
