Nancy Drew STILL a hit!!!
By KMac
I think initially I may have wanted this set more than my daughter. I grew up reading Nancy Drew books. I asked my 11 year old to just read the first one and now she is hooked. She's reading them all, in order, and is on #15 already. The is a WONDERFUL set to give for a gift for ANY age!!

My favorite series in childhood, Nancy Drew rocks!
By Z Hayes
I remember accompanying my mother to our neighborhood used bookstore every weekend, and using whatever I had saved of my allowance to purchase a used Nancy Drew mystery book. This was almost three decades ago, and the memories of those weekends are still fresh in my mind. I used to read and re-read those Nancy Drew books until I had memorized entire passages!

Sadly, I had lost many of those books with years spent moving around, until a couple of years ago when my kind husband purchased the entire set for me as a Christmas gift! I was over the moon, especially since we have a young daughter and I was hoping to share these books with her. The set comes in a cardboard box but it is not of very good quality so I threw it out and shelved the books in my bookcase. The covers are beautifully reproduced from the books I remember from my childhood, though it needs to be mentioned that the covers are not from the original artwork back in the 1930s. For those seeking the original covers, you'll need to scour the internet and/or purchase some of the "Just as You Remember Them" reissues (which I have since added to my collection). Note: It is worth doing some comparison shopping as there are some really good deals (my set cost about two hundred dollars).

Price has gone up! Buyer Beware
By Katherine A. Zimmer
I purchased this set NEW from GREATBOOKDEALS in January 2009 for $240.99 and now the price for the SAME new set is $398.78! What could possibly be the reason for raising the price so high?? These are children's books. Raising the price to such an unreasonable amount will only prevent parents from being able to afford them. I understand capitalism, but this is just plain GREED.

More of a making-of book
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:68d5df5779fa42b4c9682ad3c41007a4]]This book is more like a making-of book that talks about how the film was made. Depending on your expectation, you may or may not be disappointed with the book.

This 192-page hardcover is filled with concept art, film stills and commentary on the production process. The pages are laid out like magazine style, quite busy but beautiful.

Half of the book are filled with film stills. They are beautiful, yeah, but if you're one who likes to see production art, storyboards, character designs, then you may feel that all those film stills could have made way to include more artworks.

About the concept art. They are a mixture of sketches, digital painting, a few 3D renders and some schematics of things like Superman's statues, Batcave. The digital paintings are nice but they are often quite rough as you can notice the lack of detail when blown up to large sizes in the book. Some of the digital paintings lack the finesse while others actually look wonderful when done right. The sketches are also nice, but perhaps too sketchy. Especially for interiors, buildings, it can be quite difficult to visualise the structures.

As for character design, Superman's pretty much fixed in terms of look. Batman has the new Batsuit, mech suit and his new gadgets. Wonder Woman has 6 pages of coverage. Lex Luthor also has 6 pages. Doomsday has 2 pages. There aren't a lot of costume or character designs to speak of. Most of the characters you'll see them in the form of film stills. Batman's the one with more designs to feature.

It's a mixed bag for me with regards to the art. But I'm saying that because I know and have seen better superhero film artbooks out there. If you have the artbook for The Man of Steel, you should expect art in a similar style.

So the highlight of this book is actually the beautiful film stills of scenes and characters. The other highlight is the insightful commentary talking about the production process. The downside is the art? I'm not too sure but I felt that the artworks could look better. Or maybe it's just not the style of art I was expecting. Oh well, art is subjective.

Overall, I still think it makes for a nice companion to the film. As a making-of book, it's quite good but as an artbook it can be better.

3.5 out of 5 stars.

Batman v Superman: The Art of the Film
By JMM
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice pits two iconic heroes against one another. That premise, when combined with the visual talents of director Zack Snyder, promises to be a great looking film with lots of interesting design elements. This book features concept art from the film and highlights the overall look of the film along with key design choices related to the characters.

As an effective sequel to Man of Steel, Dawn of Justice maintains the design sensibilities of Snyder's previous Superman film. The film very much wants to look and feel like the real world, with sites like the US Capitol making an appearance. The fictional city of Metropolis looks much like our own modern-day urban population centers - with Lexcorp HQ Tower looming large in the skyline.

The wold of Batman, on the other hand, is a bit more stylized. Gotham is as dark and dismal as it's ever been. Because this is Batman's first appearance in this story (The Dark Knight trilogy is not considered part of this "universe"), the designers were able to start from scratch and do something different. Snyder and his team succeeding in creating a Batman that is differentiated from all the others that have come before. The book also features Batman's many gadgets and weapons, his mech suit, as well as the Batmobile and Batwing.

The book also takes a brief look at the other characters in the film - Lex Luthor, Doomsday, and of course Wonder Woman. The challenge across the board was to take inspiration from the comics, but make the designs unique and interesting for the big screen. A few key scene in the film are also detailed, including the fight between Batman & Superman, and also the Knightmare sequence.

The imagery in the book is outstanding. It's mostly sketches and conceptual artwork. But there are also some production photos and some stills from the completed movie. If you are interested in this film and enjoy Snyder's visual style, then you'll probably enjoy this book.

like me, you will love this book
By Roberto A. Rodriguez
If you are a fan of movies, like me, you will love this book. Full of great pictures, concept art, and behind the scene insight on the ideas, characters and props used during the film. A lot attention went into the making of the book and it shows. If you have a film fan, a DC fan, or a superhero fan in the family, this will make a great gift. I'm very happy with the purchase.

Basic Tagalog for Foreigners and Non-Tagalogs: (MP3 Audio CD Included) (Tuttle Language Library), by Paraluman S. Aspillera, Yolanda C. He

Basic Tagalog takes a friendly and innovative approach, emphasizing the structure of the Tagalog language rather than just vocabulary.

This user–friendly beginner Tagalog book teaches more than 2,000 Tagalog words and expressions with over 500 being added for this new edition. These are spread throughout 44 lessons, the Appendices and the exercises as well as in the Tagalog–English and English–Tagalog vocabulary lists at back of the book. The added Tagalog vocabulary is meant to keep learners abreast of changes that have occurred in the language since the first edition of Basic Tagalog which was published. This edition has retained all the grammar lessons and the tried–and–tested teaching methodology developed b the author, Paraluman S. Aspillera, for the original version. Her method has proven to be extremely effective for tens of thousands of foreigners and non–Tagalogs who have used this book to lean to learn Tagalog, including many who have successfully learned to speak Tagalog, read Tagalog and write Tagalog through self–study on their own without a teacher. An audio CD has also been added to facilitate the correct pronunciation of Tagalog words and phrases. A succinct introduction to the language and a description of the character of Filipinos will hopefully provide learners with a better understanding of the language they are learning.

The lessons in Basic Tagalog are intended for a three–month period of intensive study followed by another three months of applied oral communication. In six months (or about 250 hours), it is expected that an average learner should be able to speak, write and understand simple, everyday, conversational Tagalog as spoken by most Filipinos. Highlights of this book include:

  • Over 2,000 Tagalog words and expressions.
  • 44 lessons organized by organized for efficient language absorption.
  • Extensive exercises and activities to reinforce the lessons.
  • Vocabulary lists serve as comprehensive English–Tagalog and Tagalog–English dictionaries.
  • Completely updated and expanded with new materials.
  • Includes accompanying MP3 Audio CD.
Using Basic Tagalog to study the Tagalog language will further encourage both non–Tagalogs and non–Filipinos to speak Tagalog better. Only then will they appreciate the individuality of the language that reflects the resilience and flexibility of Filipinos all around the world. In the end, such learning will improve daily interactions and communications between non–Filipinos and Filipinos—whether in business, education, tourism, social or civic endeavors.

The book is good and has a lot of useful words and lessons
By SaraT
My husband is Filipino and we got this book so he could teach me Tagalog. The book is good and has a lot of useful words and lessons. A lot of the sentence structure they teach is more formal and isn't what is actually used in the Philippines. The CD could be better if it told you the English version of the words.

Not a good book for Beginners
By Dee
When I first got the book I thought it was basic Tagalog, but it wasn't. This book is for people that know some Tagalog. It was very hard to use for learning the language. Not a good book for beginners.

From the Few Comes Adequacy
By S Warner
There aren't many sources from which you can learn Tagalog, which is strange, since it's the second most widely spoken Asian language here in the US. In fact, the study of Japanese is the big fad right now although it doesn't even make the top ten list of most widely spoken languages (besides English) in the US, according to the 2000 census. Anyway, I'm currently in high school and studying ang wikang Tagalog recreationally, and I was fascinated when I polled my friends and familiy about languages spoken in the US...asked whether or not they were aware of the Vietnamese, Mandarin (Chinese), Korean, and occasionally even the Hmong languages, most responded affirmatively.

However, when I questioned my friends and family members about their awareness of Tagalog language...only 1 of friends knew this language even existed (he's half Filipino). In fact, most of my friends and family didn't know where the Philippines even are, and a few didn't even know there was such a country.

Not to mention the intimidation factor of the Tagalog language; yes, Chinese and Japanese have radically different scripts and grammar than English, but there are tremendous resources for both! Japanese has anime and manga as an enticing resource, and Mandarin Chinese has that whole top language in the world thing (1.3 billion speakers), but Tagalog is entirely scary when potential learners see sweet, innocent little words, like tiwala, meaning 'trust', heinously mutilated by prefixes, infixes, and suffixes to become: pinakapinagkakatiwalaan; which means, I think, 'the most trusted'. Who, among the Americans of my generation, so accustomed to instant gratification, would really care to learn the grammar of a language that would even attempt something like that, unless to get in touch with their roots?

Not to mention the reassurance of "oh, the Philippines had been under Spanish rule for hundreds of years, and the Tagalog language has been tremendously influenced by teh spansh language!3@!!#432!!" Well, not really. There are actually several languages in the Philippines that are much more Spanish-influenced, but grammar-wise, Tagalog just didn't conform besides adopting stuff like numbers (veintedos as opposed to dalawampu't dalawa), some nouns, and words like mas (more) or o (or). Yes, learning Spanish would help...with about 400 words. Good luck from there.

This book is a decent resource out of the very few affordable resources for Tagalog out there. It's updated, and contains reading material to practice on (or just freak yourself out with), and I hate to break it to you...but it's only a book. Basic Tagalog will not teach you words at an amazing rate, learn "like a child would", "pass as a native", or any other commonly guaranteed results if you don't do the excercises, and if you don't make an effort to make flashcards, or if you put no extra effort in learning whatsoever. Unfortunately, learning from a book-any book on language-will feel like work at one time or another, even if you're simply learning out of interest like I am. This is not the book's fault; it utilizes, most of the time, the drill-and-rote method of learning, which means if you only "go by the book" and not take the effort to say, watch any Tagalog-language movies or speak to Tagalog-speaking people, it might take years to master.

In short, I was very surprised by the good quality of the book. I agree with other reviewers that it should contain answers, and it is INCREDIBLY annoying that there are typos within the book itself (!), but we're getting reading material from essayists and poets as opposed to trite little tourist phrases, and perhaps the lack of an answer key was to influence the reader to become more of an active learner...to study the writing provided, to study it's structure and affirm for oneself whether one is correct or not, or even influence the reader to (in the age of the internet) ask a fluent speaker, who would be incredibly happy to know someone else is attempting to master a language they love.

Perhaps I'm overthinking it ;)

Either way, Basic Tagalog is inexspensive enough where you can purchase it, take what you need from it, and leave it if you so prefer...or become interested in adopting a ruggedly lyrical, resilient language and connecting with the equally resilient people who've bothered learning it.

The Farming of Bones, by Edwidge Danticat

It is 1937 and Amabelle Désir, a young Haitian woman living in the Dominican Republic, has built herself a life as the servant and companion of the wife of a wealthy colonel. She and Sebastien, a cane worker, are deeply in love and plan to marry. But Amabelle's  world collapses when a wave of genocidal violence, driven by Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo, leads to the slaughter of Haitian workers. Amabelle and Sebastien are separated, and she desperately flees the tide of violence for a Haiti she barely remembers.

Already acknowledged as a classic, this harrowing story of love and survival—from one of the most important voices of her generation—is an unforgettable memorial to the victims of the Parsley Massacre and a testimony to the power of human memory.

Amazon.com Review
In a 1930s Dominican Republic village, the scream of a woman in labor rings out like the shot heard around Hispaniola. Every detail of the birth scene--the balance of power between the middle-aged Señora and her Haitian maid, the babies' skin color, not to mention which child is to survive--reverberates throughout Edwidge Danticat's Farming of Bones. In fact, rather than a celebration of fecundity, the unexpected double delivery gels into a metaphor for the military-sponsored mass murder of Haitian emigrants. As the Señora's doctor explains: "Many of us start out as twins in the belly and do away with the other."

But Danticat's powerful second novel is far from a currently modish victimization saga, and can hold its own with such modern classics as One Hundred Years of Solitude and The Color Purple. Its watchful narrator, the Señora's shy Haitian housemaid, describes herself as "one of those sea stones that sucks its colors inside and loses its translucence once it's taken out into the sun." An astute observer of human character, Amabelle Désir is also a conduit for the author's tart, poetic prose. Her lover, Sebastian, has "arms as wide as one of my bare thighs," while the Señora's complicit officer husband is "still shorter than the average man, even in his military boots."

The orphaned Amabelle comes to assume almost messianic proportions, but she is entirely fictional, as is the town of Alegría where the tale begins. The genocide and exodus, however, are factual. Indeed, the atrocities committed by Dominican president Rafael Trujillo's army back in 1937 rival those of Duvalier's Touton Macoutes. History has rendered Trujillo's carnage much less visible than Duvalier's, but no less painful. As Amabelle's father once told her, "Misery won't touch you gentle. It always leaves its thumbprints on you; sometimes it leaves them for others to see, sometimes for nobody but you to know of." Thanks to Danticat's stellar novel, the world will now know. --Jean Lenihan

From Publishers Weekly
The almost dreamlike pace of Danticat's second novel (Breath, Eyes, Memory, 1994) and the measured narration by the protagonist, Amabelle Desir, at first give no indication that this will be a story of furious violence and nearly unbearable loss. The setting, the Dominican Republic in 1937, when dictator Trujillo was beginning his policy of genocide, is a clue, however, to the events that Amabelle relates. She and her lover, Sebastien Onius, are Haitians who have crossed the border. Amabelle is a servant to a patrician family, while Sebastien endures the brutal conditions of work in the cane fields. The lovers each have poignant memories of parental deaths, and other deaths enter the narrative early, subtly presaging the slaughter that is to come. Haitians in the DR, always regarded as foreigners, are "an orphaned people, a group of vwayaje, wayfarers." When a military-led assault against them does erupt, it is a surprise, however, and as Amabelle barely survives a massacre by soldiers and an equally bloodthirsty civilian population, the narrative acquires the unflinching clarity of a documentary. In addition to illuminating a shameful, little known chapter of history, Danticat gives us fully realized characters who endure their lives with dignity, a sensuously atmospheric setting and a perfectly paced narrative written in prose that is lushly poetic and erotic, specifically detailed (the Haitians were betrayed by their inability to pronounce "parsley") and starkly realistic. While this novel is deeply sad, it is infused with Danticat's fierce need to bear witness, coupled with a knowledge that "life can be a strange gift" even when memory makes endurance a difficult task. 50,000 first printing; first serial to VLS; QPB selection; rights sold in U.K., Germany, Spain, Holland, Denmark and Finland; paperback rights to Penguin; author tour.Sept.)

From School Library Journal
YA-At one time the people of Haiti and the Dominican Republic accepted and nurtured their interdependency. Trujillo's racist regime marked the end of this peaceful coexistence with the deplorable Massacre of 1937. This tragic and horrific ethnic cleansing is remembered by Amabelle, an aging Haitian woman who lived through this period as a young girl. Orphaned when her parents are swept away by a swollen river, she is cared for by the Haitian community across the river in the Dominican Republic. Eventually she falls in love with Sebastien Onius, a worker in the cane fields; their lives are forever entangled as the events of 1937 gather them in. She flees, becoming companion and nursemaid for the wife of Se?or Pico Duarte, a member of Trujillo's inner circle. For the rest of her life, Amabelle searches for Sebastien, never completely able to accept his death. Danticat's lyrical writing propels readers forward. This is an emotionally charged story and a powerful historical account that helps readers understand the radical division that exists between two countries on a single island.

Farming of the Bones
By A Customer
This short novel was a real eye opener for me, before I picked it up I'd never heard about the government ordered massacre of approx. 30,000 Haitians in the Dominican Republic in 1937. Danticat is truly a gifted writer. The story, told by an orphaned Haitian servant is as lyrical as it is tragic and is definitely worth picking up.

Extraordinarily Artful and Highly Successful
By Julio Belen-Publicist
Danticat's debut with BREAT, EYES, MEMORY was more than impressive; it was magical and eloquently resonant. It was the voice we'd all been waiting for. But with THE FARMING OF BONES, what we have is Danticat's finely-tuned clarity of vision reaching the heights of authentic folk art. This novel is unforgettably vibrant in every regard. Entire seminars and workshops have rightfully been organized and presented around this literary icon. Edwidge Danticat is the single topic of scholarly discourse everywhere you turn, whether nationally or internationally. In THE FARMING OF BONES the author has masterfully returned us to a particularly shameful and hideous moment in the history of the neighboring countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic (sharing the Caribbean island called Hispaniola).
Dominican Dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo in 1937 ordered the slaughter of an estimated (historically documented) 40,000 Haitians and Domínico-Haitians living and working in the Dominican Republic. This historical incident is virtually unknown to outsiders and to most people not of that era. Danticate has thankfully unearthed enough skeletons form the unknown graves to awaken the interest of today's generation, wherever they reside. But this is also a profound love story like no other you've read. The young protagonists Amabelle Desir and Sebastian Onius allow themselves to experience an all-powerful love in a land where love itself had been vanquished by brutal terror and unbridled hatred. This is truly a novel that rewards he reader over and over with the message of a people's suffering and unbelievable courage. If you haven't read this novel, you are denying yourself a genuine literary treasure.

For Edwidge Danticat, A Nobel Prize for Farming of the Bones
By A Customer
Edwidge Danticat is a powerful writer who economizes her words but not her emotions. Her descriptions of life love and death are short, and poignant. Amabelle, the main character in this short novel lives in you. She takes you into a complex uncomfortable world where good does not follow good and where your destiny is out of your control. The interaction between the characters is very well presented. It creates tension and anticipation. You know that what is coming is not going to be pretty and you are not disappointed. . This novel is not for the faint of heart. It is a harsh story told in excellent style. Danticat gets an "A" for the Story and an "A+" for her writing. Danticat is already a mature writer who tells the true story of the massacre of thousands of Haitians at the "Bloody River". First, you cannot put the book down till it's over and then, you are so sorry that it has ended. It will be hard for Danticat to best " The Farming of the Bones" This book should be required reading for Haitians and Dominicans. This is History told in a Powerful Novel. P.S. I also loved Esmeralda Santiago's "America's Dream" Andre from Chappaqua, NY

Chemists are used to the operational definition of symmetry, which crystallographers introduced long before the advent of quantum mechanics. The ball-and-stick models of molecules naturally exhibit the symmetrical properties of macroscopic objects. However, the practitioner of quantum chemistry and molecular modeling is not concerned with balls and sticks, but with subatomic particles: nuclei and electrons. This textbook introduces the subtle metaphors which relate our macroscopic understanding of symmetry to the molecular world. It gradually explains how bodily rotations and reflections, which leave all inter-particle distances unaltered, affect the study of molecular phenomena that depend only on these internal distances. It helps readers to acquire the skills to make use of the mathematical tools of group theory for whatever chemical problems they are confronted with in the course of their own research.

Roman Centurions 31 BC-AD 500: The Classical and Late Empire (Men-at-Arms), by Raffaele D'Amato

In the years between 31 BC and AD 500 the Romans carved out a mighty empire stretching from Britain to the deserts of North Africa. The men who spearheaded this expansion were the centurions, the tough, professional warriors who led from the front, exerted savage discipline and provided a role model for the legionaries under their command.

This book, the second volume of a two-part study, reveals the appearance, weaponry, role and impact of these legendary soldiers during the five centuries that saw the Roman Empire reach its greatest geographical extent under Trajan and Hadrian, only to experience a long decline in the West in the face of sustained pressure from its 'barbarian' neighbours. Featuring spectacular full-colour artwork, written by an authority on the army of the Caesars and informed by a wide range of sculptural, written and pictorial evidence from right across the Roman world, this book overturns established wisdom and sheds new light on Rome's most famous soldiers during the best-known era in its history.

Part two of a great study on Roman Centurions
By Anibal Madeira
In this book we leave behind the Republic. The centurions of the classical and late empire, although sharing many military roles with Republican centurions, developed into something more: A possibility of social ascension, a cadre of tough and obedient public administrators, political police officers and even enforcers for Emperors and senior politicians.

The Imperial period Centurions and Centenarius (in the late empire) are now disclosed in this small but marvelous book by one of the greatest investigators specialized in ancient Rome. With academic rigor and intelligent reasoning, Prof D'Amato guides the reader through the careers, lives, equipment, clothing and social status of those officers that were the true anima of the Roman Army. As always, he "discloses" great pictures of rarely published artifacts and sculptures, like the one probably representing a centurion wearing a lorica Segmentata (MOST probably; the sword in the left hip is quite a giveaway for the period in question; also the staff in his right hand and the richly embossed attic helmet wouldn't be usual in a legionary), from the Templum Gentis Flaviae; or the leather and linen greaves (or lining of the greaves) in the Vindonissa Museum! Other artifacts are given new and logical interpretations or possibilities, like the tombstone of T. Calidius.

The art from Giuseppe Rava details with unparalleled detail the equipment, creating magnificent aids to better visualize the explanations of Prof. D'Amato. The plates include Centurions from the following periods:

- Augustan-Tiberian Period (1st Cent BC - 1st Cent AD)
- The Julio-Claudian dynasty
- The investiture of a centurion in the Flavian dynasty
- A head presentation to Emperor Trajan during the first Dacian Campaign
- Centurions from the Antonine and Severan periods
- The anarchy of the 3rd Century AD
- Parley during the battle for Italy, early 4th Century AD
- Officers from Western and Eastern Rome during the 4th and 5th Centuries AD

This is a must buy for anyone interested in Roman warfare. If you havent bought the first part of this study, the title is "Roman Centurions 753 - 31 BC, The Kingdom and the age of Consuls". Buy it, you won't regret it.

A great source of information on the Roman centurion!
By Aristotle S. Spencer
This book is a great addition to one's library on Roman history. The author's main intention is to use primary sources, Roman writers and archaeological finds, to outline the centurion's career path and also explain his role in Roman military and civil society. He also devotes a considerable amount of space in describing and illustrating extremely well their equipment.

Dr Raffaele D'Amato writes in a way that is easy to understand and enjoy. The colour plates are brilliant (drawn by his co-author Giuseppe Rava) and they act as a major draw card when purchasing this book or others from Osprey Publishing.

This book is a sequel to his first book `Roman Centurions 753-31 BC' and both are a great reference source on Roman centurions. I have read both with great satisfaction.

The Centurion
By John A. McIntosh
A small but wonderful book on the 1st Century Roman Centurion, with excellent details and graphics about the backbone of the Roman Army. Powerful men who trained the Roman soldiers and Interacted with the local population. I'm studing the Centurions in the New Testament and how the occupying power in Israel delt with the political and religious in the first century. A very helpful addition to my library.

Composing Electronic Music: A New Aesthetic, by Curtis Roads

Electronic music evokes new sensations, feelings, and thoughts in both composers and listeners. Opening the door to an unlimited universe of sound, it engages spatialization as an integral aspect of composition and focuses on sound transformation as a core structural strategy. In this new domain, pitch occurs as a flowing and ephemeral substance that can be bent, modulated, or dissolved into noise. Similarly, time occurs not merely as a fixed duration subdivided by ratios, but as a plastic medium that can be generated, modulated, reversed, warped, scrambled, and granulated. Envelope and waveform undulations on all time scales interweave to generate form. The power of algorithmic methods amplify the capabilities of music technology. Taken together, these constitute game-changing possibilities.

This convergence of technical and aesthetic trends prompts the need for a new text focused on the opportunities of a sound oriented, multiscale approach to composition of electronic music. Sound oriented means a practice that takes place in the presence of sound. Multiscale means an approach that takes into account the perceptual and physical reality of multiple, interacting time scales-each of which can be composed. After more than a century of research and development, now is an appropriate moment to step back and reevaluate all that has changed under the ground of artistic practice.

Composing Electronic Music outlines a new theory of composition based on the toolkit of electronic music techniques. The theory consists of a framework of concepts and a vocabulary of terms describing musical materials, their transformation, and their organization. Central to this discourse is the notion of narrative structure in composition-how sounds are born, interact, transform, and die. It presents a guidebook: a tour of facts, history, commentary, opinions, and pointers to interesting ideas and new possibilities to consider and explore.

Review

"Clearly formulated starting points engage the reader in more challenging concepts and interesting lines of enquiry, contextualising the many perspectives surrounding each topic. This well researched treasure chest of quotes, references, and examples illustrates an insightful text which the author, himself with decades of experience as a transcontinental practitioner, has enriched with personal reflections that in turn allow the reader to do the same."-Natasha Barrett

Curtis Roads' book is a kind of prism that reevaluates the field of music composition in the light of the new technologies of the 21st century. He builds a thousand bridges between different approaches to attributes like pitch, rhythm, time scales, and even sonic narratives in order to help us to understand present music practices." -Horacio Vaggione, composer, Professor Emeritus, the University of Paris VIII

"A rich and enjoyable survey for the computer musician, ranging from the objects of compositional manipulation to the performative aspects of the shaping of sensory experience. This book will be of interest not only to the electronic music composer, but also to the performing musician, and the general reader interested in the process and principles of musical design." -Elaine Chew, Professor of Digital Media, Queen Mary University of London

"[I]f you want a great overview of just about any aspect of the field of electronic music, you'll find it in this book. Clearly written, with a minimum of mathematics, it's the kind of book you can refer to time and time again."--SoundBytes

A worthy contribution to the ways in which we hear, perceive, and talk about sound
By Saltillo
Overall, an excellent, clear, concise discussion of the aesthetic elements that drive most (but not all) manifestations of the use of electronic equipment to generate sounds in ways that are intended to be received as "art." Professor Roads tries to cover a lot of ground here: the history of the practices, audio examples (from the companion website) to hear what he is discussing, as well as general areas of intellectual, scientific and artistic concern for people engaged in these practices. For me, personally, the most important aspect of this book is its contribution to the formation of a fundamental vocabulary and set of discursive conventions for talking about electronic music. Let me clarify: I honestly believe that there is no "self-evident" art. We all need to be assimilated into discursive traditions concerning art and it is through that assimilation that we are taught how to perceive, understand and communicate our experience of art. One does not simply go to a Shostakovitch symphony and understand what one is hearing and why it is worth listening to. One does not simply walk into the Prado museum and see some old Hieronymous Bosch painting and know what is significant, relevant, valuable, and pleasing about it. In the case of electronic music practices, the challenge is profound. It is a practice that has emerged before we have developed a common set of discursive practices that allows your average listeners to appreciate it, talk about it, communicate what their hear or perceive and what opinions they may have about it. Most of us are left with some degree of residual "baggage" in our discourse - whether it is inherited from immersion in the traditions of European 12 tone orchestral or chamber composition, or the traditions of pop and rock music - that misguides our ability to make sense of what we hear when we attempt to listen to electronic music. Professor Roads has done a masterful job of helping to frame the discussion in this regard, giving us a set of "canonical" terms, concepts, and ways of describing what is happening to the sounds we hear that allows us to engage in a true praxis of participation in the aesthetic experience.

Unfortunately the book is not without its short-comings, most of which Professor Roads seems to be aware of, but which nonetheless detract somewhat from the book. The first and most thorough and pervasive is his fetishistic attachment to the concepts of "composition" and "composer." These concepts are useful of course. But I would argue they are far more useful in the realms of pre-electronic and non-electronic music. Within electronic music there are many ways in which the very concepts of "composition" and "composer" are undermined, subverted, and in some instances become irrelevant and meaningless. And yet for Professor Roads, an employee of the university as an institution, locked into a series of institutional norms and conventions that demand his acceptance, the idea that people are still "composers" engaged in "compositional practices" in the domain of electronic music remains natural and sacrosanct. I believe the idea of an aesthetic of electronic music must take into account the myriad ways in which this fetishized concept becomes "de-naturalized" by electronic musical practices.

Another shortcoming is Professor Roads's intentional and complete dismissal of the question of "live performance" as an element of electronic music praxis. He is painfully away of this short-coming, and offers an apology early on in the book. Unfortunately his apology is along the lines of "I know some people think live performance matters. Historically it did not in the early pioneer days. And my personal practice is so deeply tied to the idea of acting as a 'composer' making 'compositions' in a studio, that I have no experience with, familiarity with or authority to speak on the topic of live performance." I find this apology deeply dissatisfying. Its like someone writing a book about jazz and saying "I do not discuss improvisation in this book because I exclusively work as a composer and songwriter and therefore since I never actually play jazz, I have nothing to say about improvisation as an element of the jazz aesthetic." Well pardon me, but doesn't that miss one of the fundamental points of trying to describe the aesthetic of jazz in the first place? Likewise, much could - and should - be said about the unique ways in which performance is itself an element of the aesthetic. And it is not - as Professor Roads seems to believe - simply a matter of discussing the virtuosity of playing a synthesizer on a stage in real time. There are many layers to the question of performance that never even arise in the context of non-electronic or pre-electronic music, where there is a sharp conceptual and practical distinction between "composition" and "performance" (the latter being understood in the traditional paradigm as simply a "translation" of the pre-planned instructions into the actual creation of sound). If jazz improvisation taught us anything, it was that such a distinction is problematic. In the world of electronic music, things of course become even more interesting. For example, what should one make of - and is there anything to say for - forms of practice like when Swedish electronic music duo Minilogue recorded its 2013 album "Blooma" as a series of recorded "live performance" jam sessions from which they were able to extract enough particularly pleasing, note-worthy moments that could be compiled as "tracks" onto a CD? Some of the actual "live performance" footage as well as videos explaining the equipment set up - in general terms - was put onto youtube and profiled on the website of ableton, the makers of the software used by Minilogue to make the album. And more generally, what can be said about the phenomenon of the rise of the "DJ" or the emergence of "DJ" culture today? It is not uncommon to see artists like Julien Bayle share the stage at music festivals with performers with names like "Dillon Francis" and or Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith perform at Denmark's Roskilde Festival. And whither the DJ? I have been told - not sure if true - that the "Goa" music that eventually became known as "trance" was invented by DJs like Goa Gil at hippie parties in Goa India in the 1980s using techniques of tape splicing and tape looping - the exact same techniques pioneered by Pierre Schaeffer decades earlier in a workshop in France. At what point does that phenomenon become worthy of acknowledgement and discussion? At what point does the craftwork of a Sasha or John Digweed or Bassnectar or Skrillex become something that a true aesthetic of electronic music needs to recon with, whether for good or for bad?

This last comment brings me to the last and final shortcoming I found in Professor Roads's treatment: his sometimes unreasonably elitist dismissal of much of electronic music today as mere "pop music". This is problematic for several reasons. First it reflects another residual paradigm he has inherited from a pre-electronic/non-electronic musical aesthetic and his position as an academic professor of music: I am referring to the "high brow" / "low brow" mindset that pervades so many aspects of our contemporary cultural practices. Although he tries to defend his perspective early on in an end-note, Professor Roads basically takes the approach of focusing his discussion on performers and pieces of music that he deems worthy of discussion, and broadly dismisses much of what he ignores or passes over as "pop music" without specifying who or what he actually considers to be "pop music". It leaves one wondering: if he didn't mention a certain person or a certain work, is it because he just didn't have time or space to cover everything, or because he genuinely considers it beneath him to discuss such because it is mere "pop music" (which seems to be his preferred pejorative for anything he considers too low-brow for treatment in a work like this). Although this attitude only shows up sporadically, and by no means did it prevent me from being enormously impressed by this book, it happened often enough to become a mild on-going annoyance. And I don't say that just because I like "low brow" electronic music. On the contrary, I think Professor Roads is missing a major aspect of electronic music that is unique and significantly different from non-electronic, pre-electronic musical practices by allowing this elitist high-brow/low-brow mindset to color his perspective on electronic music itself. Namely this: the distance between the "high brow" of electronic music (that Professor Roads purports to speak for) and the "low brow" (of which he chooses not to speak) is much shorter than is the case in non-electronic/pre-electronic music and much shorter than Professor Roads believes. In writing a book on traditional European music theory, an author might be hard-pressed to avoid mentioning the name "Bach" anywhere in the text; but could quite easily get away with avoiding any mention of "Beatles" or "Lennon/McCartney". Such a schism is harder to sustain in speaking of electronic music. Let me be more specific: many, if not most, of the practices and techniques described in Chapter 4 (Creating Sound Materials), Chapter 5 (Sound Transformation), Chapter 6 (Processes of rhythm) chapter 7 (pitch in Electronic music), Chapter 8 (articulating space), chapter 9 (multiscale organization) and chapter 10 (sonic narrative) are routinely employed by creators of what Professor Roads would dismiss as "pop music". One can learn to hear and identify when listening to many of the most accomplished and serious producers of the many forms of dance-oriented electronic music examples of many of the topics emphasized in this book. The Table 5.1 on pages 132-134 of the book is essentially a list of the bread-and-butter tools of the trade for sound transformation in electronic music, whether for the lowest brow "pop music" maker or for those whom Professor Roads views and holds in esteem as his peers. This is not to say I question Professor Roads' choice of sound examples on his companion site. On the contrary - I think he has done a very good job of finding and hand-picking specific examples that very effectively illustrate the points he wants to make. I am simply saying, for someone who is interested in electronic music on its own terms, as a true "new aesthetic", there is far more being done that is interesting and of note and worthy of attention in the non-academic, allegedly "pop" side of things.

Overall, however, regardless of where one's preferences and tastes lean in listening to electronic music, what is truly to be admired by Professor Roads's work, is the way in which it frames basic issues and gives us all a common ground for listening to and talking about this phenomenon in a way that is a meaningful contribution to the advancement of defining such a "new aesthetic".

Definitive book on a new aesthetic of electronic music
By John_G
Dr. Roads, who teaches computer music research, obviously knows his stuff. The book is a well-written discussion of a new aesthetic of electronic music. It could become THE Text Book on the Subject. Text is written at college-level comprehension.
