A Wonderful Cookbook

This is my favorite Italian Cookbook. I purchased it 15 years ago and still use it all the time. I was sorry to see it was out of print, as my copy is so worn. This is the real Italian cooking, arranged by the different regions of Italy. Don't expect typical Italian-American fare (spaghetti and meat balls with gallons of tomato sauce, pizza with tons of meat and cheese, etc.). The recipes in this book are spectacular. Some of my favorites include Osso bucco Milanese (braised veal shanks) with saffron risotto, spaghetti with red clam sauce Viareggio, Manzo brasato (a beef roast, slowly braised in red wine with vegetables, served with polenta), and the Abruzzi pasta sauce made with lamb, red sweet peppers and tomatoes (d'Agnello). The recipes are easy to follow. Though the author often asks for fresh tomatoes, we've found that good canned plum tomatoes or crushed tomatoes in puree work fine for these recipes. Although occasionally, an ingredient is not readily obtainable in the U.S., you can usually find suitable substitutes. If you love authentic Old World Italian cooking, this book is well worth having.

Pricey compared to other similar books

This is my third or fourth bento cookbook purchase, and I found that it doesn't really contain anything special or different from the recipes I already have. The book does have nice pictures, which is a plus. However, I feel the price is too high compared to other similar titles (Effortless Bento, Just Bento Cookbook, etc.). I would recommend those books over this one (or perhaps Yummy Kawaii Bento for those more interested in charaben) as the recipes are similar and they are both under $15 (this book was listed at $23 at the time of my purchase). I am not displeased enough to return the book, but I do somewhat regret the purchase.

I like making stylized bentos as an effort to eat healthy. This book had great ideas and the recipes given are delish that I've tried so far. To note the recipes are geared toward adults so if looking for recipes for kids this may not be the book for you

The best Spanish-English English Spanish dictionary!

After reviewing a lot of dictionaries, each one claiming to be the best and most authoritative in its kind, my choice was the Oxford Spanish Dictionary. It has entries for the uses of Spanish from different countries, including Latin America, Spain and also, "old/archaic" entries, and idioms. Plus, it shows you how to apply a particular word or phrase, which could be the same for everybody, but could have all sorts of different connotations depending on the context or the country where you are. It is absolutely great and I had recommended it to anyone that has asked me for a good Spanish-English dictionary.

Simply the best!!!

I have several other Spanish dictionaires, but not one of them can compare to the 'El Diccionario Oxford'. Coming from a person who utilizes Spanish for a living, I don't know where I would be without it.
I purchased the 1st edition impulsively about six years ago, the year it came out. I had never heard of it, but there was only one on the shelf right next to about a dozen LaRousse's. I scanned through the pages of the Oxford one, comparing it to the ever-popular LaRousse. My immediate instict after examing them was to go with Oxford. To be sure, for the last six years of intense college essays and other reports, it provided accurate translations, useful colloquial phrases and phrases I didn't know a dictionary contained!!! Oxford has been at my side ever since, proudly outranking LaRousse. Now that was the 1st edition, I can only imagine the 2nd!

Interacting Overseas

Before undertaking a study abroad program in Bogotá, Colombia (5 years ago), I spoke almost no Spanish. I took an older edition by this author with me at the time. Several other authors claimed to have the best resource, but this author proved to be well above the best. Within 3-4 months time, I was speaking fluent Spanish while taking college level courses. A great deal of vocabulary could be learned by asking questions in everyday society, yet a good portion needed to referenced the old-fashioned way. I was able to succeed in my courses because of the vastness, depth and broad range of terms and phrases in this resource. Not only did this resource help me to excel in college, but in everyday life as well. It exemplifies all words and phrases in a multitude of contexts virtually exhausting all possible utilizations. In addition, it recognizes region-specific terms and phrases when necessary. Unlike any other publication, this dictionary references vulgar terms, which I found to be a priceless tool. These are parts of everyday living, and should be able to be referenced like any other part of spoken language. I have shown this publication to a plethora of individuals from all walks of Hispanic culture, and all have been equally impressed. This, of course, including individuals ranging from ages 16-65, from lawyers and optomologists to bakers and cab drivers. I still have my 1994 edition and it hasn't outdated one bit. This edition only capitalizes on the previous edition. I can't recommend this publication enough. It is very well though-out, written and organized, yet it doesn't take a biochemical engineer to decipher its contents. If you don't shell out the measly 30-some odd dollars for this one, then you really aren't that eager to learn another language.

THE BOOK IS A VERY HELPFUL ADDITION TO ASSOCIATED TEXT REQUIRED FOR MY COURSEWORK.
The book comes highly recommended by Mental Health professionals nationwide. The book is a handy, helpful guide for all persons in the MH field, including Social Workers, Child Welfare Advocates, etc.
Having access to the cases enhances your learning. It is vital to understanding emotional, psychological and other health and mental health issues.

I love this book for LCSW group supervision cases. It has been a hit with my LCSW group. It's not from the DSM5 but it has not mattered one bit, we just search in the DSM5 for the current dx.

Wonderful companion to the DSM-IV-TR

VERY HELPFUL!!! The casebook provides examples that make the already difficult DSM-IV-TR a lot easier to apply and understand. I have been reading this as a sort of study-guide to the DSM. Reading the cases then looking over the DSM again has made the disorders seem more alive and considerably less difficult to apply. The cases are fairly straight forward and the "discussion" section after each one provides the detail that one needs to understand, not just what they just read, and how to apply it, but WHY it makes sense in a diagnostic setting. I would recommend this to anybody trying to learn abnormal psychology as the DSM itself is not an easy read.

No one is left unfed by the fruits of this Perennial Classic!

A timeless classic filled with timeless ideas and ideals.

I think Merton writes for all of us in this book. He leads us, he uplifts us, he motivates us, he accuses us, he challenges us, and he comforts us. He exudes such a solid spirituality.

I read this for the first time in the mid 70's, riding the #7 IRT subway to and from Manhattan every day. I look back at how Merton (or maybe it was not him) had the ability to captivate me in that environment. He just seemed to draw me in, amidst all the noise and heat of summer (there was no air-conditioning). I still remember the experience--a challenging, transforming, spiritual experience.

Part of my memory of this was that I encountered Truth--It was alive!--though I could not always describe how that was so. That memory has always allured me to reread this book. I did--a number of times. A reread of this is a completely new experience! I recently read him again, first the book--next as an audio book. I think the latter experience was even more impressive. Hearing his words has a remarkable effect. I don't think Merton (or Truth) leaves anybody unchanged!

Great Spiritual Book indeed

Great Spiritual Book indeed! The author takes you from the basics of catholic spirituality (and even there he takes you into its profound spiritual meaning) to the depths of Catholic faith delving into a wide spectrum of stepping stone in depth journey that tackles different subjects with indepth of insight and modern spirituality such as the love of God and love of neighbour, the virtues such as faith and hope, discernment, right intention, prayer, sincerity and humility, God ''s will, vocations, mercy, recollection and more. A valuable spiritual book and great spiritual author.

Merton

Thomas Merton has had a profound impact on my life. While not Catholic [Episcopal, and fairly orthodox at that] he is very inspiring in the way in which to be totally surrendered to a good heavenly Father. "The more time we spend looking for perfection here on earth, the more time we waste finding it only where it can be found, in God". This quote has helped me to love people all the more, and love God above all else.
I can't thank God enough for saints like Thomas Merton who help lay people and novices like myself be caught up in a huge and wonderful Father.
