Helpful but rather dry and at least one serious error

This little gem is packed with all sorts of tricks to make short-term memory a snap. And let's face it, short-term is mostly what we use. After we've bought the groceries, how much longer do we need to remember that shopping list? This is not to say you can't stretch some memorized facts to a much longer term, like to the end of the school year for that final exam, or retaining seldom-seen people's names for as long as you work for that big company.

The book is a fresh take, with new ideas, on the older memory books sold by Harry Lorayne (who built upon a history of two thousand years of memory techniques). At the heart of it, though, you're still using your imagination and wild, absurd, comical images to relate a fact you need to memorize to a place, an event, a number, or something called "memory of loci" (such as rooms in your house, etc.). Kudos to Dominic for bringing the latter back after the Middle Ages suppressed it.

Dominic adds some fresh ideas to the established ways, or reintroduces methods that Harry and those before him didn't mention. An example of the former: How I Wish I Could Enumerate Pi Easily (3.1415926, the number of letters in each word). Or the latter, as an extended acronym: Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain (ROYGBIV, colors in the rainbow). For the music majors among us, Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle (learn some music theory if you don't understand that).

One place where the book is seriously in error is section 44, Binary Numbers. Dominic does the obvious, turning triplets into base 10 numbers. Unfortunately, he apparently has never written a computer program, nor even just a small script. His numbers are SERIOUSLY WRONG. If you don't know binary, don't worry. For the rest of us, encountering this section is like driving down the highway at high speed then suddenly throwing the tranny into Park. Something akin to a controlled crash, and it is seriously distracting. Dominic writes: 000=0 001=1 011=2 111=3 110=4 100=5 010=6 101=7. I think most of us will recognize that 0 and 1 are correct, but 2 through 7 are something from Behind the Looking Glass that Alice must have lent to Dominic. I used a lot of white-out on these pages and elsewhere that reference them.

Though not "wrong," Dominic flies in the face of centuries, sometimes millenia, in other sections. For days of the week, he uses Sun-Sat values of 1,2,3,4,5,6,0. Mathematicians have for centuries used 0,1,2,3,4,5,6. Dominic's premise remains intact, but his make-your-own-road reinvention requires us to forget what we've learned since childhood, ignore what the world has used for hundreds of years, and learn a new ordinal system for days of the week. Yes, I did some serious editing of this section to bring his written work and ideas inline with the customary ordinal system.

The same can be said for his numeral mnemonics. He has his own phonetic choice, the Dominic System, where 0=O 1=A 2=B 3=C 4=D 5=E 6=S 7=G 8=H 9=N. I have to take serious exception to his choices, not because he's thrown away the centuries-old Mnemonic Major System, but because his system does not permit the full phonetic sounds of the Engish language to be used. Where is L and F/V, for example? We can't contrive the words LoVe, ViaL (PHiaL), ViLe, eViL or LoVeLy using his choice of phonetics. There's no M, N or R. Also we have 3=C and 6=S, so either we have an ambiguous choice for S/Z sounds, or the 3=C should actually be 3=K (K, CH and hard C as in cookie). True, I would have to unlearn what I already know, what millions of people know, and drop the Major System to adopt Dominic's, but with such weakness apparent in his choices, why would I? It was too much effort to edit his text in these chapters, so I just took the high points (which are very good, by the way), and applied them to the the de facto standard used for centuries.

Would I recommend the book? If you haven't been taught any memory techniques or ordinal sets, or studied these on your own, then yes! Certainly! The books is fresh and modern and has great ideas for tricks you can use (assuming you're willing to go at this as a paid-for course and set aside time each week to concentrate on it).

If you now other de facto standards, examples of which I've given above, then my recommendation is "maybe." I enjoyed it and learned a good number of tricks. But I stumbled a great deal in many sections, so much so that I found myself arguing with Dominic in my mind rather than concentrating on what I was reading. It took a great deal of effort to get to the end. Worth my time, but maddening all the same.

A Pretty Good Book on Mnemonics Especially for Beginners!

A mnemonics book by a world memory champion Dominic O' Brien. He explains his specific techniques for a variety of subjects.

What I like most about his book is he breaks it in related sections based on the skill set of the individual reading. Someone who has no experience can begin learning the basics and continue through to cover much more advanced techniques in later sections.

I would recommend this book to anyone with slight to a serious interest in mnemonics.

Too much too fast

I am an avid reader and I'm constantly looking for ways to improve my retention of what I have read. I have no doubt that Mr. O'Brien is a master of what he does. However, it doesn't translate well into the written word.

As of this writing, I have covered about half of this book. There are numerous exercises to "prove" to you that the technique works, but after doing one set and going on to the next, it is easy to forget the first.

Mr. O'Brien uses several different techniques to train/improve the memory. Most of them are all classics that can be found in several other sources.

There is no real consistency throughout the book. Different situations require that the reader use a different techique. Since no one works in all situations, you have to master all of them. This takes up a lot of time.

One saving grace is that by using these techniques, the reader has to really concentrate on what is being read. Just by increasing one's awareness and focus while reading, will increase retention.

It is a good read. Hardly practical or efficient.

I would like to find some technique that can be applied to a wider variety of situations. This way, there would be less to remember initially, less time invested, and greater comprehension. Maybe I'm looking for too much.

A Must for Every Seventh-day Adventist!

Reading Ellen White is by far one the most priceless books I have ever read. This book has laid out in a simple manner the keys to effectively and accurately interpreting the writings of Ellen White. What makes this book so powerful is the fact that the author - George Knight - does not seek to establish his own method of interpretation, but rather present's to the reader how Ellen White herself related to - and interpreted her own writings. It is interesting to see how some of Ellen Whites quotations dealing on the same issue can at first glance appear to contradict one another. However, this is the same way the Bible can appear. A comprehensive study on the topic in question would allow one to reach a balanced conclusion that would spare the sincere reader all of the drama associated with extremes.

In Reading Ellen White, George Knight presents several warnings as well. One of those warnings I found especially helpful to myself. The warning is found in the chapter titled, `Focus on the Central Issues'. Here George Knight presents what he refers to as , `the theology of the center'. This theology invites the reader to focus on the central themes of a passage instead of looking for side issues that don't matter. In the chapter that followed, George Knight gave an example of a movement in Ellen White's day calling the remnant church to abandon shaving. According to them shaving was `the god of this age' and should not be practiced by those claiming to be God's children. They quoted Matthew 10:30 which says that God has numbered all of the hairs on our head. According to them, cutting off what God had cared enough to count was arrogance. However, the central issue of the text is not that God doesn't want us to shave but that He loves us and knows us better than we know ourselves. By focusing on the central themes we can avoid falling into fanatical snares such as this one.

Another chapter that I found very powerful was the chapter titled, `Use Common Sense'. George Knight gave some great advise and also showed how not following this counsel can be deadly. He told the story of a group of seven missionaries who wanted to be so faithful to the letter of the law that they ended up dying. In this scenario a disease had stricken the region where they worked and drugs were administered to prevent sickness and death. Reading Ellen White is a wonderful book. It is useful in explaining that Mrs. White was not a radical or extreme personality. Many of the things she was quoted as saying were applicable only to one individual for a specific set of circumstances, not to be applied generally. This book assists in understanding how to read and understand and apply her writings. Totally wonderful book.

Students engage with the ideological foundations of revolution and government through close readings of Locke, Paine, and other contemporaries. Each student’s ultimate victory goal is to have his/her side in control of New York City at the end of 1776 (not at the end of the Revolution, when all know who won), as well as to achieve certain individual goals (e.g., slaves can attain freedom, propertied women can be granted voting rights, laborers can make deals for land). Winning requires the ability to master the high politics arguments for and against revolution as well as the low political skills of logrolling, bribery, and threatened force. Military force often determines the winner, much to the surprise of the students who concentrate on internal game politics.

Reacting to the Past is a series of historical role-playing games that explore important ideas by re-creating the contexts that shaped them. Students are assigned roles, informed by classic texts, set in particular moments of intellectual and social ferment.

Reacting to the Past explores important ideas by recreating the historical contexts that shaped them. It consists of elaborate games in which students are assigned roles, informed by classic texts, set in particular moments of intellectual and social ferment.

 

Students “run” each Reacting game, which includes multiples roles for classes ranging in size from thirteen to thirty students and requires from seven to fourteen classroom sessions. Reacting improves speaking, writing and leadership skills, promotes engagement with classic texts and history, and builds learning communities.

 

Reacting can be used for a wide variety of curricular and institutional purposes. Reacting classes–consisting of several games–have provided the foundation for a first-year general education.  Or Reacting can serve as an upper-class “capstone” experience. A Reacting game can also function as the discussion component of large lecture classes; or it can be enlisted for intersession courses, honors programs, and other specialized curricular purposes.

 

Reacting to the Past has been developed under the auspices of Barnard College. It won the Theodore Hesburgh Award (2004), funded by the TIAA-CREF, for pedagogical innovation, and has also received substantial support from the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE) of the U.S. Department of Education, the Teagle Foundation, and the Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation. With this support, Barnard College hosts a series of conferences throughout the nation at which interested faculty and administrators learn about the curriculum by playing mini-versions of the games.

About the Author
William Offutt is Professor of History and Faculty Advisor for the Pforzheimer Honors College at Pace University. He received his AB from Stanford University, and his J.D. from Stanford Law School. Abandoning the law, he then went to graduate school, earning a Ph.D. in Early American History at Johns Hopkins University under Professor Jack P. Greene. His first book, Of Good Laws and Good Men: Law and Society in the Delaware Valley 1680–1710, was published by Illinois University Press. His academic interests focus on the relationship between law and society, particularly the methods by which legal systems obtain and keep their legitimacy. He has taught courses on colonial America, revolutionary America, the Civil War, Constitutional history, and American women’s history. In addition to his own Reacting game, he has taught eight other Reacting games to students at Pace, and he has participated in numerous Reacting conferences as Gamemaster and/or player.

Good, but would not recommend to beginners.

I was looking for a book that would relate to a lot of the stuff I am learning in my program at school (Masters Degree). The book is very detailed which is good, but if you do not have a lot of experience with some of the formulas being used you might struggle. Not that I am a pro, but I have been around long enough to understand what the book is trying to teach. The book is ok. Its not bad, but its not great either. Some of the examples it uses could use more detail or better wording. Also, at the end of each chapter there are some test problems, but I could not find the answers anywhere in the book. The questions have a "CD" Image next to the questions, but I do not know if that means a disk should have come with the book. Bottom line. If this subject is new to you, then you may want to look into other books. I would only recommend this book to people at an intermediate level.

Something to note: The book came damaged with a cracked spine and a couple of other dents. That was a little disappointing since I was expecting a book wrapped in plastic that looks new and not used. I am going to return the book because of that. Regardless of the damage, my rating is based solely on the material of the book. But the time I had with it was enough to see how much of a rating I would give it. I am waiting for my other book to come in which is an Operations Management book (ISBN-13: 978-0078024108). I am hoping for a better layout in my new OM book. Especially since it cost a lot more ;)

Good for what it does, bad for what it doesn't.

I'm not yet through with this book in the course I am taking that uses it, so bear that in mind. Also bear in mind that I come from a mathematical background, not a management or industrial or systems engineering background. That said, this book is distinctly divided into two major areas:

1) What it does well
2) What it doesn't do well

Let's talk about what it doesn't do well. New in this edition are the inclusion of many qualitative ideas including risk factors involving a range of four terms from variation to chaos (something apparently new in the field), a guidance on methodologies for aggregate planning, the entirety of Chapter 7, among other things.

And for each of these things (we're currently on chapter 4 in class, but I've read through Chapter 10), nothing is explained in any concrete terms. It comes off as a lot of double speak to throw you around so the author can say "Hey we included this new material now we're the most comprehensive book out there!" You're given a rough explanation on something, shown no example on how someone might apply this knowledge, and then asked to explain things yourself. This was quite the issue in both the Variation-Chaos range of risk analysis (where the wording of each example you're supposed to match to one of the four terms was largely ambiguous) and when dealing with aggregate planning but considering "special cases," such as stock outs, demand backordered or lost, etc.

In some cases, you're meant to justify a point (like deciding if something is a variational risk or a planned risk), but the author gives no real indication that this is okay and treats it more as a binary idea (you're right or wrong so choose correctly). This is disconcerting since apparently, there actually IS a statistical difference in the differences in terms--meaning there are concrete differences in them, so there actually can be right or wrong answers. Considering this edition was copyrighted 2015, the BASIC paper defining these terms came out in the early 2000s, and significant research has been done to better elucidate those terms since then, this author could have done just a wee bit more research into how managers/researchers actually USE these terms.

But in the case of aggregate planning, the biggest offender comes into play. Engineering is a largely jargon-heavy field, where each textbook uses its own vocabulary, experienced professionals use theirs, and while there is much overlay, good textbooks accurately explain (sometimes just one sentence is necessary) what this jargon means.

This book does not. You are assumed to not only have some knowledge of manufacturing or production and the jargon associated, you are ALSO expected to have knowledge of financial measures you might not yet have. This is because the book talks about a few ideas as if you already knew them and then tells you to deal with said problem. A rough example is the book telling you that stock outs can be a major factor in aggregate planning because of some reason, so now here's a problem telling you to modify a previous problem but include a stock out.

Don't know what a stock out is? Don't know how you modify an existing problem to accurately reflect it? That's too bad. It's not a hard thing to do, but neither is adding 2 and 3 to get 5, but you still had to learn it somehow by counting two and then three more fingers on your hand when you were younger. Imagine if your teacher taught you how to add but assumed you already knew; here we have an operations book teaching operations analysis and assuming you have some operations analysis knowledge already. Bad idea.

Which leads to the other offender that isn't TOO bad but only because of my "good points" section coming up. There are very few examples illustrating how to do anything at all. The book is largely interested in the qualitative or descriptive explanations for why things are the way they are. From a math background, this is the engineering equivalent of "handwaving" that math text authors will use to skip several steps between examples or (worse) proofs. Normally (again, for my upcoming explanation), this isn't too bad. The problem is how VARIED the problems all are, requiring some precision in tinkering with the machinery, but you're only told the basics of what an idea is.

Imagine if someone detailed to you, very clearly, the steps in assembling a basic electronic circuit involving resistance, capacitance, inductance, and voltage. And then you were suddenly given a brief explanation for what a signal antenna does, and you were now asked to build one. Good luck! But that is what is done here frequently.

So now let's talk about the good points!

The examples this book does show, they are amazingly explained with almost every step fully detailed, and the problem types are varied enough for you that, when you solve them, you will wind up with many different tools under your belt to tackle just about any problem (provided of course you can handle them). In many cases, problems are solved through Excel than by hand, and this book doesn't just throw Excel at you--it teaches you how to work with Excel. You are told, very clearly, not only what to do, but WHY you need to do it according to the formulas or problem presentation, so you can accurately (and correctly) link your machinations to your actual thinking process (indeed, many students struggle seeing their professor quickly go through an example in Excel or on the computer when equations and examples are solved in the book step-by-step, or "by hand.").

In fact, this book is an excellent text on showing you how you ought to be setting up problems in Excel so you can learn really, REALLY good organizational skills in managing your worksheets. Except for books specifically dealing with Excel (like the Excel 2013 Bible), I don't think I've seen a book that better illustrates the organization good planners use when creating tables of information to use (and it all starts early on in Chapter 3's Aggregate Planning, so you get a lot of experience throughout the rest of the book, where many other books just throw in an Appendix saying "oh by the way you can use Excel here's how").

This, then, is the perfect marriage of thinking like a planner (working by hand or thought) and planning like a worker (putting numbers in a table and manipulating them to some extent).

There is also some obvious thought as to the flow of the book. You're taken from Step 1 of the planning procedure all the way to the Final Step of the production procedure in a way that, I think, accurately reflects the production plant's "mind," if it can have one. I've seen books that throw all the basics of all the steps at the beginning and use the latter half to discuss special situations. This book prefers to handle everything in a timely way. Need to learn how to deal with inventory? Done. What about inventory with uncertain demand? That's not 12 chapters away because it's "special," that comes logically right after. Considering how irritatingly many engineering books are written, especially one so focused on descriptive ideas rather than pure number crunching math, this is a welcome breath of fresh air.

It can be compared to the massive and commonly used Operations Research text by Winston, which is a typical student's introduction to linear programming, operations research, and program planning. That book is definitely the ideal introduction to a subject with how clearly examples are done, but the flow of topics seems... Off. Integer programming is formally taught way too late considering how frequently it gets mentioned in earlier chapters (mentioned for good reasons, meaning it would have been better included earlier).

But back to this, the flow is superb.

And finally, the math. The math is written just well enough to justify itself as a typical undergraduate engineering book. This is meant for the user, not the researcher, so theory is largely discarded in favor of explanations for the basis of the equation(s), as well as derivations of useful equations based on "initial equations" that come from said explanations. Most engineering textbooks are pure derivations whose explanations are reduced to simply "We're going to turn equation 1 into equation 2. Why? Just do it." The author clearly intends this book for a student to learn FIRST, not a worker who needs a reference first.

All in all, I plan on keeping this text, and I definitely recommend it, even if I don't give it 5 stars. There are just things it can do better, but this is certainly not a bad book at all.
