About the Author
Farshid Delshad (born 1972) has a Master of Arts in Iranian and Semitic philology from Iran. He earned his first PhD in Caucasian and Slavic Studies from Tbilisi State University in Georgia. Later, he received a second Masters in "German as a Foreign and Second Language Acquisition" with a minor in "Indo-European Linguistics." He also received a PhD in Historical Comparative Linguistics from the German University of Friedrich-Schiller. Farshid has been teaching languages and cultures of the Middle East since 1994 in Iran, Georgia, Russia, Germany, France, and Switzerland. His focus includes Contrastive and Historical Linguistics and Minority Research in Islamic countries. He is currently working in Germany and in the United States as an associate scholar for Languages and Cultures of the Muslim World. Farshid is the author of several published chrestomathies and readers in Persian as a Foreign Language.

The learning process is modern and interesting for this language.

A unique learners' textbook with a fantastic glossary!

As a Persian language learner, I needed to find a textbook that I could rely on in order to learn more about modern the Persian language and Iranian heritage. Dr. Delshad's book helped me improve my writing and communication skills. I was especially impressed by the glossary, which is very detailed and contains translations of Persian words in both German and English. Having used this textbook, I feel pretty confident that my Persian skill set is now twice as strong as before.

Charming book

Adorable book with charming illustrations. My 18 month old son has not quite gotten into it yet, and he is a book lover, but I feel like he will really enjoy it when he is a little older. The book is a perfect size for little hands without being a "pocket sized" book. The board pages feel really sturdy and will hold up to much handling though many readings. It can also be wiped clean with a wet wipe if needed!

This is a cute little book. It hasn't become a favorite in our house but it is still a good book. The quality is good and the board book pages at are great for little ones who haven't learned how to be gentle with book pages yet. We got this as an Easter basket present for our one year old. She loves books so this was an easy choice and a great gift for her.

Good book. Bought it for my 9 month old and 3 months later we are still reading it every day. At first he was getting thru the pages very quickly no at almost 12 months he likes to spend more and more time on every page looking at the details on the pictures (pictures are great- very bright and well painted) . Would recommend for infants

The "Zen" of Advanced Digital Signal Processing!

Several years ago, my company hired Fred Harris as a consultant to help create an extremely complex multi-channel digital receiver. As it turned out, we could not have found a better candidate. Fred doesn't just offer state-of-the-art processing techniques - many of which he himself has developed - his pragmatic focus on efficiency and real-world implementation is truly refreshing.

This superb book delivers that same approach and philosophy in a very readable, approachable text. Unlike the vast majority of books in the field, which teach only the mathematics of signal processing, Fred teaches you what it really means, and how to make it work. You'll learn extremely efficient signal processing techniques, but even more importantly, you'll gain a much deeper understanding of digital communications that will change the way you approach systems design. From my perspective, this is quite simply the best book available for practitioners who are creating advanced digital communications systems.

The most valuable text ever for Multirate filters and DSP

With excellent clarity, multirate filters are described, derived and then implemented. Any DSP filter designer will benefit from this book, advanced or not. Also, a series of proprietary filter structures have been 'donated' to the DSP community in this book, wherein some of the most effecient filter structures I've ever seen are explained and implemented.

Maybe I am the only one who didn't get much out of this book

I was hoping to get a good understanding of multirate DSP out of this text, having no knowledge of it previously. However, I was not succesful. The text starts out well with a practical illuminating example of the use of multirate signal processing. However, I was not able to absorb much knowledge in the subsequent chapters and gave up on continuing. There are very few equations in this book, which to me was initially promising as I am tired of DSP math books. The author relies more on graphics and figures to explain his point, but I found that the detail was lacking. Perhaps someone with stronger background in this area would be better served by this text.

About the Author
Cormac Cullinan is an author, practicing environmental attorney, and governance expert who has worked on environmental governance issues in more than twenty countries. He is a director both of Cullinan and Associates, Inc., a specialist environmental and green-business law firm, and the governance consultancy EnAct International. At the invitation of Bolivia, Cullinan spoke at the 2009 Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen and led the drafting of the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Mother Earth, which was proclaimed on April 22, 2010, by the People's World Conference on Climate Change and the Environment in Bolivia. In September 2010, Cullinan played a leading role in establishing a Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature and currently sits on the Executive Committee of the Alliance. Cullinan is also a research associate of the University of Cape Town, sits on the City of Cape Town's climate-change think tank, and is a nonexecutive director of ICLEI Africa. He lives in Cape Town, South Africa.

The most significant work on envirinmental law written to date

This is the wisest and clearest book written on environmental law I have read. It focuses on the root cause of environmental destruction and shows us that by becoming more earth centric within law (i.e. we are not at the centre of the universe but are part of a greater system that includes the earth) we can integrate human behaviour into the ecosystem and therefore have healthier planet and therefore a healthier humanity since we are part of the whole and not separate form the Earths environment.

Well written but lacks depth

Cormac Cullinan's book Wild Law is inspirational. Cullinan writes fluently and rhythmically, effortlesslly carrying the reader along page after page. Even Cullinan's fairly frequent use of neologisms is not disruptive; their meaning is almost always immediately clear from the context in which they appear, and they seem fitting, new words where new words are useful.

It is true, however, that in the first few chapters Cullinan relies too heavily on acronyms representing international organizations and conferences, and it's easy to forget what each one means after it's been explained with its first appearance. This difficulty is only a minor inconvenience, however, and it pretty well disappears as we get a bit more deeply into the book.

In addition to being an accomplished prose stylist, Cullinan presents original ideas about how to deal with an increasingly fragile planet. Some of the new ideas are fairly well developed, but most are merely mentioned repeatedly, so often in some instances that I found myself mistaking familiarity for understanding when, in truth, I had only been presented with brain-storming repeitions of the same gloss.

Cullinan works as an environmental lawyer with an international clientele. It seems certain, therefore, that he is, as a matter of routine, deeply immersed in the sort of legal-rational conflictual parsing of environmentally sensitive, ideologically charged concepts and rules that provide the intellectual substance of geo-political engagement over ways to minimize environmental damage while avoiding barriers to economic growth.

Nevertheless, Cullinan is also a mystic and a romantic. When indigenous people living in the Amazon River basin tell him that their shaman, after taking traditional narcotics, is able to communicate with the tribe's natural habitat and find out what is best for both their community and their ecosystem, Cullinan believes them. Literally. Callinan's openness to mysticism is emphasized as he makes the claim that the rest of us, in our hyper-rational world, could learn important lessons from the shaman's relationship with nature.

Similarly, Callinan views the earth -- perhaps the entire universe! -- as an organism with a rhythmic heartbeat -- maybe even a consciousness! -- that is discernible if only we are committed to listening carefully enough.

In contrast with what passes for commonsense in our commoditized world, Callinan holds the animistic view that not only humans and perhaps other animals, but trees, tumbleweed-strewn deserts, mountain ranges, all sorts of natural phenomena, should be viewed as subjects rather than objects. Subjects are purposeful, as a river flowing within its banks, rising and falling with rainfall, snow-melt, and drought, sometimes filling a flood plain, and, if healthy, carrying along a rich variety of aquatic life.

Much of Wild Law will seem absurd precisely because of its hopeful, mystical, and romantic character. The rest will seem wildly impractical simply because entrenched international interests that seek to control our world would not stand for the tree-hugging, we're-all-in-this-together constraints that Callinan's proposals and rudimentary ideas would impose on their unfettered ability to make as much short-term profit as possible.

None of this bothers me. I recognize Wild Law's mystical, romantic, and communitarian limitations and, as far as I can tell, Callinan does as well. There remains, however, something else -- maybe more serious, maybe less -- that bothers me about Wild Law. Pick at random any ten-page sequence, read the pages, and then pick another ten-page sequence in the same way. The chances are very good that you'll find little or no difference in the substance of the two sequences. In short, the book is very redundant. Yes, functional redundancy, redundancy with a purpose, as in repeating a difficult idea, has a legitimate place. But Wild Law seems pointlessly redundant, as if it should have been a brief journal article rather than a book.

I readily admit that from chapter to chapter there are occasional, sometimes striking differences in detail, and Callinan's fluid prose style just keeps us reading along, not particularly troubled by the fact that we've read all this before. Still, if Callinan wants to make a really strong case for what he terms "wild law," as I wish he would, he needs a lot more substance. Nevertheless, I have to admit that I liked the book and I learned from it.

Read for Inspiration, Not for Practicle Application

"Wild Law: A Manifesto for Earth Justice" is a call for the next evolution of modern civilization. Some criticism of this book has centered on the practical application of what this book calls for - I didn't read it as a manifesto of practical change, but instead as a manifesto of philosophical change. Humans, whether we want to admit to it or not, are an integral part of the world's ecosystem; we cannot disconnect ourselves from it through scripture or cybernetics... no matter what we do to ourselves - our bodies, our brains, our religions, our civilizations - we will still be a part of the whole. Some would call this the Gaia theory, but to me it is just obvious, common sense. If you kill the predators in an ecosystem, the ecosystem will change; if you alter how we do something, it will change the ecosystem. Everything is connected to some degree or another.

What "Wild Law" proposes is that we alter our laws - our very civil structure - to take into account that we are a part of the greater system, and what we do affects that system. Unless we blow the atmosphere off this planet, whether humans are here or not and whether this planet can support human life or not, history has shown that some form of life will likely continue on planet Earth. If we can evolve our civilization to live more in sync with our planet, its ecosystem, and every other living thing, we can enhance our chances of continuing to be a part of that system.

About the Author

Romano Guardini (1885–1968) was ordained a priest in 1910. He was a professor at the University of Berlin until the Nazis expelled him in 1939. His sermons, books, popular classes, and his involvement in the post-war German Catholic Youth Movement won him worldwide acclaim. His works combine a keen thirst for God with a profound depth of thought and a delightful perfection of expression.

This is a short analysis of the Lord's prayer.

This book, by Romano Guardini, takes the Lord's prayer and analyzes it line by line, with Guardini, in his profound, deep and masterful manner explaining the true nature and meaning of this prayer, and evoking more respect, insight into its depth, and understanding of its significance. A reading of any of Guardini's books is in itself a spiritual experience, for he was a man of God and a very powerful beacon of spiritual energy and strength. He was also a master of words, and this prayer is filled with words that symbolize, on a deep deep level, the nature and workings of God in our lives. As with all of Guardini's writings, I highly recommend this - he is one writer one should not be without.

Guardini is top notch in this book!

Read this book if you want truly deep, spiritual instruction. As usual, Romano Guardini's insights are the fruit of his years of prayer and study. What I like best is that whenever you read this book, it is like you tackled it for the first time. I used this book all during Lent and plan to use it in the future. My awareness of the depth of the Lord's Prayer has been greatly increased. If you want depth in your spiritual reading, read this book!

An excellent introduction to a better way of praying the beautiful prayer given by Jesus to his disciples. All too often we recite the prayer without thoughtfulness. Guardini's wise words, thoughtful insights, and inspirational reflection help Christian believers recover the deepest meaning of the prayer and guide them to offer it with heartfelt understanding and devotion.

Great, quick therapy!

I get this book for all my friends because it's a great pick-me-up for all situations. Procrastinate? Have trouble sleeping? Have trouble with anger? Having trouble starting to exercise? This book has quick little chapters on almost all of our problems. The best part is that you don't have to commit the time to reading many pages/chapters of a self-help book; this book is organized into mini-chapters that take about a minute to read (hence the title) that offer you *just* the right inspiration so you get can going and working on that 'issue' you're having. And, the advice is clear and down-to-earth, in addition to being very provocative and inspiring.

This book is like a good friend (or therapist) that can help you in any situation, with very clear, easy-to-follow advice. It's very deep in its simplicity.

Headlines with no depth

I think it's safe to say that any book with the selling hook of some conveniently relative, yet irrelevant, number of so called tips or strategies for doing this or that is going to pretty much suck. With all due respect for this guy Arnold Lazarus and his coming up with multi-modal therapy... this book is so basic, it really won't solve any of your problems. Consider it more like a phone book, if anything, with 101 contacts. It reminds me of watching Dr. Phil. The guy does nothing but offer references to solve your problems while using his name and fame as an acclaimed expert to get all the credit.

Save your money and harness the power of Google to do a little research on your own, then buy the book that's right for you, not the one that tries a catch-all approach and makes about 2 pages of space for each topic, not to mention the redundancy and repetition throughout.

Common Sense in an easy-to-read volume.

One hour, five days a week, father and son team Arnold Lazarus, Ph.D. and Clifford Lazarus, Ph.D. co-host a radio talk show. Those who call their show at radio station 1350 WHWH in Princeton, New Jersey, are offered advice on life's key issues, in ". . .succinct and straight forward bites." And this is how they wrote the book, The 60-Second Shrink: 101 Strategies for Staying Sane in a Crazy World--with compact and direct suggestions the layperson can understand.
Arnold A. Lazasrus,, Ph.D. is described as, ". . .an award winning, internationally acclaimed professor of psychology, therapist, author, lecturer and clinical innovator." His son, Clifford N. Lazasrus, Ph.D., has a practice in psychotherapy and neuropsychological testing and is the Director of Comprehensive Psychological Services in Princeton, New Jersey. They know of what they speak.
Each of the chapters tackle one problem. The dilemma is stated in a vignette, then steps are discussed in a sentence or two that will help solve the problen. I'll use Chapter 11, which discusses problem solving, as an example.
The vignette describes, "Eric's" tendency to wallow in self-pity. "I have so many problems," Eric says, "that I don't know what to do or where to start." The doctors say, "Eric was taught a five-step problem-solving sequence, learned how to be solution oriented, and matters started to change for the better."
The steps Eric took are outlined in the two-page chapter.
*Define the problem as specifically and concretely as possible. *Generate as many potential solutions as resonabley possible. *Evaluate the various solutions for merit and utility. *Select the best solution and try it out. *Decide on the effectiveness of the implemented solution.
Under each step are suggestions that help you complete the step.
The book is not written to be read from cover to cover, but it is a tool that you can turn to when needed. Other chapter titles are "Breaking the Bad habits," "The Dangers of Faulty Positive Thinking," and Self-fulfilling Prophecies and Negativity Cycles."
Areas covered in the book are Strategies for Staying Sane, Thinking Yourself Healthy, Getting Your Actions Together, Building Successful Relationships and Communicating Effectively. The book doesn't stop there, however. Other areas discussed are Handling Anxiety and Stress, Dealing With Depression, Anger and Moods, Managing Your Weight and "Shrinking" and Shrinks. The last chapter lists more mental health notes.
Each chapter is only a page or two long. The hint on how to deal with your problems are simple, the explanations are clear. The authors refer to work by other authorities in the field and list other recommended sources of information. The pros and cons of self-help books are even covered.
The answers may seem simplistic, but the brevity of the chapters demand this. However, the book does a good job of defining problems we all face and outlinig easy steps to facilitate correction of the problems. The book does deliver what it promises by putting all the information in , ". . .succinct and straightforward bites." handy, helpful and informative, the 158 page book is definitely worth the price.
