This volume contains notes for 21 of the 22 major 16-mm sound films prepared under the direction of the NCFMF and covering nearly all of the fundamental phenomena of fluid motions. The book also briefly describes 133 four-minute 8-mm silent film loops which illustrate a particular experiment or phenomenon.

The film notes for the 16-mm sound films follow the film scripts closely—with some elaboration of detail— and are liberally illustrated with experimental scenes from the films. "With the 'film in print,' remarks Ascher Shapiro, "the reader can relive the film...he can recapture the phenomena, the motion, and the vividness of the film, but he can do so at his own speed, without being pressured by the pace of the film." The notes can also be used independently of the films and are significantly interesting in themselves—providing continuity to the subject matter which is inevitably lost in one film showing.

Good but be warned before hand...

This book is nearly identical to the sixth edition; only the values of quantities were changed around in some of the end of chapter problems. From chapters 1-8 this book did a pretty good job at teaching the material. However, I did run into quite a few snags in chapter 9 where designing PID, and PI compensators are covered. At that point the explanations get so convoluted it becomes almost impossible to get what the author is trying to tell you. Also, in chapter 8 and beyond the author pulls a low move and constantly refers to a root locus software at www.wiley/nise (or whatever it was) that Appendix H pertains to. So instead of teaching purely by hand the author just waves his hands and "uses the software to find dominant poles" with absolutely no emphasis to the methods. I and at least one other student could not get this fabled software to work, so that was a dead end. This left much of the analysis to many of the problems a complete mystery. This alone was going to make me give this a three stars, but I took a hard look and realized how much I took away from this book in spite of it, so I gave a four star rating.

This book is almost the best except for one thing...

This text is the good control systems textbook model to learn from, as an author. Nise is made for undergraduates to master control systems concepts in both state-space and transform domains. Generally, it lacks a lot of details in state-space area; it is almost a complete coverage of classical control basic concepts.

The organization of the text is not just good. It makes this text more like the only well organized text you ,may, find every 10 texts you read!

However, the text assumes you have a background in the basic differential equations and laplace transform. It connects the mathematics you know with the system model in an outstanding way that really make you visualize the system dynamics just perfectly! Surly, that depends, somehow, on the reader's motivation toward learning the concept. Although the text doesn't cover thoroughly the state-space approach, it connects both domains in your mind that make you able to see the system poles in the time domain! You are absolutely right to say 'So what!, I know all about Eignvalues and eigenvectors!', it shows you it if you don't. So, if you do know the subject well then maybe you shouldn't buy this introductory level text at all!

The bottom line is: I strongly recommend this text for classical control systems course during the undergraduate level. However, I would only recommend to use it in the state-space course as a supplementary text besides some good state-space text like Brogan.

Worthless

As a student perhaps i have a different perspective from others who have reviewed this book. I own several other controls books and am not impressed by this one. The author has a way or taking straightforward ideas and drawing them out in ways that make them hard to grasp. For the $185 dollars i paid for this book i would expect information presented in a clear way that makes a serious attempt at teaching. Sadly, i find myself consulting Wikipedia or other free resources before this book when i have a problem. Sometimes it seems textbook authors feel like they must present material in hard abstruse ways to be taken seriously. Not worth the money.

I think that professors look at this book and say "this is great. It contains everything i want to teach". Students look at this book and say "I have no idea what this book is trying to tell me". The difference is that the professors already know the material while the students are trying to learn it for the first time.

Excellent, thoroughly researched, enjoyable reading

The book is very well written, and very well researched with lots of references. It is all about Indian food. It is pretty comprehensive and focuses on the history and origins of various foods, food-related customs, cooking practices etc. There are lots of insights and relations to other aspects of culture. I found it fascinating and very enjoyable to read. Anyone with an interest in Indian food and culture should find it interesting, especially those who have lived in India.

Detailed but a bit dry

This is one of the only books of its kind on a really interesting topic, but it's more of a scholarly survey than a fun read. That's too bad because it could quite easily have been both. It's also not a great introduction to Indian food itself, because, written in India by an Indian, it presumes a basic familiarity with various dishes and native foodstuffs.
Still, if you are doing some type of research project or know a fair amount about Indian cuisine and just want some hard facts about the history of food preparation and consumption in India, this is the book for you.

About the Author
Abbi Jacobson is one of the series creators, executive producers, and stars of Comedy Central’s critically acclaimed hit show Broad City. She graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art with a degree in fine arts and a minor in video. After graduating, Jacobson moved to New York City and began training at Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. In The Miraculous Child, Alvin Aleksi Currier ably retells a Christmas folktale from old Russia. With colorful and stylistically appropriate illustrations by Nadezda Glazunova, The Miraculous Child is a timeless tale of a poor Russian family in a humble log home where a woodcutter, his mother, wife and children have almost nothing to eat, very little to trade or sell, and nothing for the Christmas Feast. The woodcutter encounters a little boy out in a field, shivering and cold. When he brings the lad into his home to share what little poor fare the family has, they discover that it's an angel they have invited in from the cold and a Christmas Feast is held that will never be forgotten. Very highly recommended for the Christmas and folktale collections at grade schools and in community library collections. --Amazon

About the Author
After many years as a Presbyterian clergyman, in 1975 Alexsi founded St. Herman's Hermitage and began a spiritual journey which concluded in his finding a home in the Orthodox Church. In addition to his work as an artist and writer, he travels widely and organizes pilgrimages in Eastern Europe for others to experience Orthodoxy from the inside out.

A treasure to keep

I own most of Alvin Aleksi Currier's children's books and they are all excellent. However this book is my favorite. I love how the author managed to put the beautiful heart-warming story into equally beautiful word, poetry-like. It is written at just the right level of understanding for a child without dumbing it down (like other children book authors do). The illustrations are beautiful and complement the story perfectly. My daughter and I read this many times with the same pleasure. A treasure to keep!

Wonderful Christmas book/gift

I have purchased several of Alvin Aleksi Currier's children's books and all have been excellent. They all are of a spiritual nature, teaching children as well as adults important values in life, in this case being kind to a person in need. The setting is in old world Russia but the story can be universal and is found in other cultures' literature as well. The illustrations are beautiful and are a window into the Russian culture of an earlier age

Same Tale, Different Culture

This is a different version of an old folktale. We enjoyed it, though, and the illustrations are nice. There are strong references to God, so if you are offended by that, skip this book. It has a happy ending. :)
