The Cultural Revolution of Chairman Mao Zedong altered Chinese history in the 1960s and '70s, forcibly sending hundreds of thousands of Chinese intellectuals to peasant villages for "re-education." Adult/High School-This beautifully presented novella tracks the lives of two teens, childhood friends who have been sent to a small Chinese village for "re-education" during Mao's Cultural Revolution. Sons of doctors and dentists, their days are now spent muscling buckets of excrement up the mountainside and mining coal. But the boys-Luo and the unnamed narrator-receive a bit of a reprieve when the villagers discover their talents as storytellers; they are sent on monthly treks to town, tasked with watching a movie and relating it in detail on their return. It is here that they encounter the little seamstress of the title, whom Luo falls for instantly. When, through a series of comic and clever tricks and favors, the boys acquire a suitcase full of forbidden Western literature, Luo decides to "re-educate" the ignorant girl whom he hopes will become his intellectual match. That a bit of Balzac can have an aphrodisiac effect is a happy bonus. Ultimately, the book is a simple, lovely telling of a classic boy-meets-girl scenario with a folktale's smart, surprising bite at the finish. The story movingly captures Maoism's attempts to imprison one's mind and heart (with the threat of the same for one's body), the shock of the sudden cultural shift for "bourgeois" Chinese, and the sheer delight that books can offer a downtrodden spirit. Though these moments are fewer after the love story is introduced, teens will enjoy them at least as much as the comic and romantic strands.

This deceptively small novel has the power to bring down governments. In Mao's China, the Cultural Revolution rages, and two friends caught in the flames find themselves shuttled off to the remote countryside for reeducation. The stolid narrator occasionally comforts himself by playing the violin, and both he and more outgoing friend Luo find that they have a talent for entertaining others with their re-creations of films they have seen. A little light comes their way when they meet the stunning daughter of the tailor in the town nearby, with whom Luo launches an affair. But the real coup is discovering a cache of forbidden Western literature including, of course, Balzac that forces open their world like a thousand flowers blooming. The literature proves their undoing, however, finally losing them the one thing that has sustained them. Dai Sijie, who was himself reeducated in early 1970s China before fleeing to France, wonderfully communicates the awesome power of literature of which his novel is proof. Highly recommended. Unintended Consequences

Unintended consequences. It's what frequently happens when you try something for the first time. You know, like Dr. Frankenstein's experiment with creating life. Christopher Columbus looking for a new route to India. Alexander Graham Bell calling for Watson. Banning Books. Thalidomide. Nuclear Power. Slavery. Smoking. Deforestation. The Automobile. Almost anything you can think of comes along with unintended consequences. Some good. Some not so good. Some, terrible.

In this novel, the author demonstrates the law of unintended consequences by telling the story of two privileged young men in China during the Cultural Revolution. They are being "reeducated" in a poor village far from their homes. There, they meet a beautiful seamstress who has not been exposed to books, western music or the ways of the world. The boys set out to reeducate her, and, in so doing, woo her. One plays Mozart for her on his violin and skillfully acts out scenes from popular movies. The other reads to her from a forbidden cache of western books by Cervantes, Hugo, Tolstoy, Dumas, Flaubert, Bronte, Balzac and other luminaries.

Because the story is related in simple language, often with slapstick humor, what should be an oppressive nightmare reads like a fairytale complete with a Cinderella, two Prince Charmings and more than one wicked villain. In the end, irony prevails over passion, demagoguery, and the best intentions of the various "reeducators".

I found it a dull read, but I may be missing something

I am not a fan of this book, but I read it for a book group. Everyone else thought it was touching, suspenseful and deep. I was the lone dissenter. They read much more into the characters than I did. I found it a dull read, but I may be missing something.

Unputdownable !

Read it in one sitting within 24 hours of buying. Author has a remarkable flair for storytelling just like other recent English writers of Chinese origin Ha Jin (In the pond, Waiting) and Adeline Yen Mah (Falling Leaves, Chinese Cinderalla). Having myself grown up during adolescence in a remote part of India on a staple diet of western classics including Russian authors like Tolstoy and Chekov, I could empathise with the characters savouring Balzac in translation notwithstanding the cultural disconnect. I also felt guilty that unlike the characters of this book, two boys denounced during Mao's cultural revolution, just for having the wrong parents; I was privileged to be growing up in a free, albeit third world country with access to a decent public library in my own cozy home town. As the Econimist has rightly said in the blurb, this book is "A paean to the magic of literature" and "A true book lover's book" (pun intended). The little Seamstress had the last word in this 21st Century French novel written by a Chinese author, ..she had learnt one thing from Balzac: that a woman's beauty is a treasure beyond price !! This tells us that Dumas,Mozart,Balzac or Beethoven transcend man made national boundaries while pollinating intellectuual curiosity of adolescents of the global village.

'The most important intelligence agent in the history of the Irish State'

Sean O'Callaghan although born in Tralee County Kerry in the Republic of Ireland was destined from the crib to be an IRA member like his father. He joined at age 15 in 1969 motivated to do so because he wanted to protect Catholics in the north from pogroms. But after coming to the realization that many IRA members were sectarian and after growing disillusioned with what he came to view as senseless violence. He volunteered his services as an informant to the Irish police, for which he took not one pence in monetary reward. While undercover he rose to become the highest ranking IRA officer in the Republic. His memoir gives the reader a bird's eye insider's view of how the highest echelons of the IRA and Sinn Feinn function and is full of personality assessments and illuminating anecdotes about it's ruling oligarchy.

Missed its mark

This book tackles a huge subject with much honesty. Sean O'Callaghan puts his hands up and freely admits that he was seduced by and participated in militant republicanism and fought for his fellow countrymen with zeal. This is not unusual and many writers and commentators have described this real experience very well in the past.
Sean O'Callaghan stands out as a fairly unique subject in being a high level operative who has completely repudiated the philosophy of the IRA. The critical stage of realisation and crystallisation of his personal morality lack description. Whilst we take one view on O'Callaghan's actions as a person, his power as a writer is lacking and he missed a golden opportunity to describe the mental anguish leading to resolve that he must have experienced. A few notes on emotions here and there don't do justice to the tumultuous experience he has absorbed. Perhaps O'Callaghan isn't too bothered - after all his mission is clearly stated as damage maximisation to the IRA. However, given his literary ambitions, he might have spent more time on describing himself rather than listing activities which we can't really absorb en masse.
Whatever one's politics, O'Callaghan's courage is assured. The book is a necessary read in understanding the development through the 1980's of Irish politics. However, O'Callaghan's direction is inflexible where Sinn Fein's was dynamic. O'Callaghan's resolve to fight the IRA and its political group does not consider their move toward a peace strategy to have any merit and to be a cynical exercise. It is his account, of course, and his opinion, but it is certainly out of step with the rest of the world. Progress has been made.
Overall, the book promises more than it delivers. It reads as a historical narrative rather than an exploration of a personal journey. When an experienced writer produces a biography, I'll buy that.

Nice to read

This book is about Sean O'Callaghan's life as a member of the IRA and his subsequent life as an informer for the Irish gardai. Good to read and interesting as it gives a good insight into his life from when he was a small boy. At first, I thought this would be similar to Martin McGartland's books, however, it is not. O'Callaghan gives a little insight into several issues surrounding the conflict between the IRA and the British and Irish forces. At one stage whilst talking about his youth he explains the link between Irish Catholicism and Irish Nationalism which highlights how much of a fraud the Irish Catholic Church really is.
O'Callaghan's book is a good read but not if you are more interested in the politics and issues of the Northern Irish Troubles. This book is mainly about the terrorist operations he helped to execute and later to prevent. It also gives solid evidence that Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness were leading members of the Irish Republican Army before they became politicians with Sinn Fein.

After Basil Hallward paints a beautiful, young man's portrait, his subject's frivolous wish that the picture change and he remain the same comes true. Dorian Gray's picture grows aged and corrupt while he continues to appear fresh and innocent. After he kills a young woman, "as surely as if I had cut her little throat with a knife," Dorian Gray is surprised to find no difference in his vision or surroundings. "The roses are not less lovely for all that. The birds sing just as happily in my garden."

As Hallward tries to make sense of his creation, his epigram-happy friend Lord Henry Wotton encourages Dorian in his sensual quest with any number of Wildean paradoxes, including the delightful "When we are happy we are always good, but when we are good we are not always happy." But despite its many languorous pleasures, The Picture of Dorian Gray is an imperfect work. Compared to the two (voyeuristic) older men, Dorian is a bore, and his search for ever new sensations far less fun than the novel's drawing-room discussions. Even more oddly, the moral message of the novel contradicts many of Wilde's supposed aims, not least "no artist has ethical sympathies. An ethical sympathy in an artist is an unpardonable mannerism of style." Nonetheless, the glamour boy gets his just deserts. Grade 10 Up-"The Whole Story" format provides illustrations and annotations to the classic text. Ross's lively and sophisticated cartoons add interest, and historical information helps readers place the novel in proper context and gives insight into its characters. The problem with this attractive, glossy layout, however, is that the text and the quotes pulled from it are not always on the same page. Further, some illustrations and notations visually cut into the narrative and may distract readers. For example, a drawing appears on the first page along with the passage, "In the centre of the room, clamped to an upright easel, stood the full-length portrait of a young man of extraordinary personal beauty," but that quote does not appear until the second page of the story. Useful as a supplement to the original novel, but not a replacement for it.

Be careful of your wishes.

A dark story, narrated excellantly with changing voices for ths different characters. A painter friend convinces the extremely handsome, Dorian, to pose for him. The painting turns out so well Dorian wants to keep it. He makes a wish that he would always be so handsome and only the painting show his aging and scars of life. His wish is granted and you should follow the outcome of his life.

Not for people with short attention spans

Unfortunately, I was disappointed with this book. I wanted to read this book so I can say I read at least one 'classic' as an adult. While I can at least say that, I found myself bored and my attention span drifting with the extended prose.

Although the book is less than 300 pages, it took me a while to complete it, perhaps due to some archaic vocabulary and extensive prose (which can bore me). That said, the novel was edited well, leaving out unnecessary details in a way that the reader could imagine what happened in the character's life without it being actually being written.

Wilde's writing is truly exquisite, and it's a shame he only wrote the one novel. While reading, I could fully envision the society and the people living in it (to the point of having strong feelings about some!).

Trust me, I really wanted to LOVE this book. And while I can appreciate this novel as a classic, I only liked it. The story was certainly quite creative and risque (for the time), which I enjoyed. I just wish it were a bit more amped-up.

In summary, if you want to read something more fast-paced, I wouldn't recommend this book. If you are a more "refined" reader, I think you have a better chance of truly enjoying it. Also, if you never had to read this in school, it’s worth reading it now.

A classic I am glad to have read

I'm not sure what my expectations were having never read but only watched various versions of Dorian Gray in shows, none of which were accurately faithful to the book. I could see how this would have been considered too risque for audiences at the time it was first published, which makes it an interesting note on how much society has changed. The book was slow moving for about the first 40% of the book and did not even move Dorian's story along. It was almost entirely about Lord Henry Wotton and a bit about Dorian, then when it did change perspectives to Dorian it still took a bit to get to the picture's importance. A good portion of the second half of the book was a litany of the "things" that Dorian would obsess over. To be honest I would skim over these and it was fine because all the detail was not necessary. Not a bad book but not a great read either. Simply a provocative book for an era long gone.

About the Author

Eric J. Simon is an associate professor of Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to science majors and nonscience majors, as well as upper-level courses in genetics, microbiology, tropical marine biology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly for nonscience majors. He is the coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts and Connections, Seventh Edition.
 

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from Harvard University (where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). During her twelve years as an editor, she played a major role in a number of successful textbooks. She is the lead author of Campbell Biology, Ninth Edition and Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

 

Jean L. Dickey is a professor of biology at Clemson University. She had no idea that science was interesting until her senior year in high school, when a scheduling problem landed her in advanced biology. Abandoning plans to study English or foreign languages, she enrolled in Kent State University as a biology major. After receiving her B.S. in biology, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. Since joining the faculty at Clemson in 1984, Dr. Dickey has specialized in teaching nonscience majors, including a course designed for pre-service elementary teachers and workshops for in-service teachers. She also developed an investigative laboratory curriculum for general biology. Dr. Dickey is the author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology, Second Edition, and is a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

It was half of what I ordered

I ordered this book but WITH the lab codes and guess what? They did not work. If you need the lab codes for your class DO NOT buy from amazon, they are charging you for something that doesn't even work! The book was fine but I ordered it for the lab codes and was more than upset when I had to rebuy the codes for $50.

Floppin' all over the place

Whoever thought it was a good idea to make this thick book a softcover, I tell you: it was not. The shear weight of this book, combined with the thin, slippery cover, makes it difficult to hold onto the book. Additionally, for whatever reason, whenever I put this textbook into my messenger bag (a regular messenger bag, nothing special), it always ends up bent and wedged under my other books. It's hard to even pull it out because there's no friction. I try to keep my things nice, but this book was the only one in my possession with dog ears and crinkles after merely one semester of use.

Asides from the obvious issue, this book was very informational and to the point, and it explained difficult aspects of biology in such a simple, succinct manner that I learned more from it than I did in many of my previous textbooks. I know I might be unfair if there is a hardcover available, but if there is not, this book can be a hassle. Get the hardcover.
