5 STAR STEAMY READ!!!

When I first started reading this book, I knew it was going to be different than anything I've read before. And I was so totally right.

First off, let me just tell you that the writing was incredible. The story in itself had me on the edge of my seat, but the writing was incredible. I was immediately sucked in by the Professor and the potential demons he hides behind the tough exterior. I've read a lot of books with tons of alpha, dominant men but I can guarantee you, Professor White was different. He made me realize that there is a lot of darkness in the world, but I found myself strangely being drawn to it, which made me crave more.

Tara was, in my opinion, an incredible character to follow along with. To watch how much dedication she was putting into preparing herself for the professor made me smile. I admired her drive and motivation to want to impress him. I saw a little of myself in her if I'm being completely honest here. She shows the same spitfire I want to show to somebody I care about one day.

On top of everything, this book was hot! Steamy hot and I normally shy away from the girl on girl scenes but those were hot as sin!! I very much enjoyed reading this book. I didn't want it to end! Lol! If you're looking for a quick, steamy, melt your panties read, then pick this one up! Then pick up book two because it's going to knock your socks off.

extremely hot erotic

This book was extremely erotic! Dead on the money for most of the actions. And extremely HOT... Fire Engine needed hot!

I have to say that the author's attention to detail made this story that much more enjoyable. From what a room looked like to what the person looked like. Which allowed this story to be truly built into ones head as they are reading.

From school classroom to their homes.. to some slight lock picking. From tied up under a desk to a bathroom gushing this is one well written story. But the downside is it did end in a cliff hanger which by all rights I Absolutely hate!

Wow! What a great beginning to a series. I was hooked from page one and couldn't put it down! I loved how Chance used the classic schoolgirl scenario, but made it much darker and edgier than what you normally find. Tara is a gorgeous, intriguing main character and Professor White is the perfect strong, sexy, male lead. The dialogue is very entertaining, the story moves quickly, and the erotic scenes are unbelievably hot! I would definitely recommend this book and can't wait to read the next.

A successful expansion of his lecture series at Harvard, Thomas Kelly's First Nights chronicles the events leading to the first performances of five enduring masterpieces. He places Monteverdi's opera L'Orfeo, Handel's venerable Messiah, symphonies by Beethoven and Berlioz, and the Stravinsky ballet The Rite of Spring in the respective contexts of the cities, musical cultures, and performance venues in which they were first heard. Kelly builds his chapters through an accumulation of minute but not trivial detail. The first Euridice in L'Orfeo was a castrato priest; the oppression of Catholics in Handel's Dublin was shocking; the legendary catcalls at The Rite of Spring's premiere began before the curtain went up.

As Kelly gathers these pieces of the puzzle together, we become desperate to find out what will happen, completely forgetting that we already know how the music ultimately triumphed over time. Along the way, there is hilarious information about the audiences (Handel's would not have been out of place at a rodeo, though Monteverdi's was unusually well informed) and reactions from the performers (conductor Pierre Monteux apparently always hated the Rite). There are also many factoids about how the music must have sounded. (Did you know that the first performance of Beethoven's Ninth included a piano?)

Kelly has provocative ideas about performance practice, suggesting that it is really a matter of how adaptable musicians need to be; he feels that musical works themselves, not just our perceptions of them, change over time. A great deal of First Nights is devoted to documents about the works, and the discography is helpfully annotated by Jen-Yen Chen. The focus of each essay is the actual premiere, but Kelly, who teaches a course called "First Nights" at Harvard, first places each event in its broader historical and cultural setting and then proceeds to fill in the scene with numerous interesting details and asides. New Insights into Old Favorites

This book brings together an extraordinary amount of interesting information about 5 of the greatest works of Western music, in the context of trying to recreate their first performances. Kelly writes with the interest of an enthusiast, but the scholarly background is immense, as befits a university press book. Plenty of interesting illustrations and diagrams, and interesting pull-quotes in boxes, break up the text, enhancing readability. I had not previously been aware that the version heard at the first concert of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique was subjected to significant rewriting before being published in the form performed today -- this is typical of the interesting insights the book adds to common knowledge. Also, that Berlioz changed the selection of wind instruments, but that one can hear many of the originals on some recent recordings. My only disappointment was that Kelly stopped at 5 works - I would love a similar work-up of first performances of the Wagner Ring Cycle, Mozart's Figaro, and a major work of Mahler - perhaps the first performance of the 8th Symphony. I guess that just means that Kelly might profitably prepare a sequel!

A Coffee Table Book You Should Actually Read

It's easy as a listener to get caught up in the impact of great music on us today and to ignore the people who brought it about in the first place. Kelly has done a wonderful job of enlightening and enlivening my experience of these five works, four of which I've spent a lot of time with over the years. He brings together stories on the composition, the cultural setting, and the nuts and bolts of putting on the first performances in a way that both academics and popular readers will appreciate.

Positive, motivational, educational.

Well written, fun to read, and these books really make you think. If you take the time to insert yourself as the main character you will start growing and changing almost immediately. Nothing happens overnight but what a wake-up call these books have been for me. But you do need to be honest with yourself and take the time to evaluate yourself so you can grow and move forward. I loved the series and am on the list for the next one to come out.

Attention to detail

The book was easy and quick to read, however, the diagrams had typos within them. Some of the arrows were wrong (backwards/double sided when they should be single/etc.). My class was tested on the placement and direction of the arrows, so learning the correct placement was difficult. This is a small detail that should have been paid more attention to before publishing the book.

Dry and boring... but Great information

I rented this book from Amazon instead of purchasing it because of the big price difference. Sometimes I get skeptical of text books because they are such hit or miss items as far as teaching students the material. This book alone will not be enough. However, it is a great introduction into learning more about the processes of information systems and understanding the importance of them in the business world. Yes, it's dry and boring. Yes, it's required for school. However, the ability to comprehend and understand this material will be the difference between someone who moves up in the business world and someone who stays stagnant. (not bashing anyone who is happily stable).

It's worth looking at and paying attention to if it's required for school. Double it up with a good book about the processes of other database systems or microsoft access, and the material can really blow your mind once you find real world applications for it.

About the Author
Harry Georgakopoulos is a Professor of Quantitative Finance at Loyola University and Quantitative Trader at XR Trading, LLC. He has been working as a quantitative trader in Chicago, IL in the high frequency space since 2007. Prior to that, he was employed at Motorola and Andrew Corp. as an Electrical Engineer, where he designed and tested microwave transceivers for 3G mobile technologies, as well as at Milliman where he served as a Quantitative Financial Consultant. His main area of expertise is in the research and development of high-frequency, automated trading systems for futures and equities. He received his PhD in Financial Mathematics from The University of Chicago.

Good, but not Great.

As a quant I was excited to read this book based on previous reviews, and did enjoy reading it, but I want to make some statements about what I didn't like:

1. This book is very introductory. It could otherwise be considered an introduction to R. If you are comfortable with R for basic statistics and manipulating data, you likely won't learn anything new in the first half of the book. The second half of the book is where the meat lies.

2. The title falls (a little) short of expectation. I would have enjoyed more specifics in regards to quantitative trading, strategy development, algorithm design, back-testing, sensitivity analysis, etc... This includes showing more comprehensive examples and a more critical analysis of such examples. Perhaps if the author writes another book, this will be the focus. I just felt that the content wasn't thorough enough.

However, this book would be great for a student who plans on having a career in risk management or banking/trading, in a role where quantitative skills are required. For those who are already in the field, if you expect to learn beyond what you already know about R or quant trading, it may not be enough to satisfy your appetite. Keep in mind I've only elucidated my criticisms.

Too much, too little, and poorly edited.

While this book covers excellent material related to quantitative trading, it suffers from several problems.

First and foremost, it suffers from the ever increasingly common problem of poor editing. Function names are misspelled, variables names are mismatched between code and text, and figures are referenced by the wrong number. Code, tables and figures are often referred to as "below" when they aren't, and there are no numbers and multiple figures per page. Really amateur stuff.

As far as the content goes, it swings to wildly between overly simplified and ridiculously complex. For example, the introduction to statistics spends way to much time using the mean as an example, but then proceeds to a detailed yet too difficult description of bias, before abruptly pivoting to variance and variance-bias trade off in just a few lines.

The R code examples are well motivated but no one should fall for the authors pretense of this being accessible to beginners. Although well formed (if not always best written), the code is not described in sufficient detail in text.

Overall, this book could have used another round of editing and maybe 50 pages of additional material in the early chapters. Also, some of the later material should have been reworked and marketed to intermediate to advanced programmers with at least some background in quantitative finance.

editorial and program example errors hinder content

In the first 2 chapters I found a number of serious editing errors. The first program examole s don't work as printed (although an experienced R coder can spot the problems fairly easily). Overall, nice content so far. But there is no link to the example programs (you have to type them by hand) and the book assumes you already have CSV files of the data in your disk (and in the proper format, with the right features/variables, etc). Hopefully the rest of the book improves dramatically. Because I want to like this book.

Beware - the dragon awakens...

Labee (later known as Livia) was 13 years old and her little sister Nason was 11 years old, part of one of the hill tribes of Thailand, when their parents sold them to human traffickers.

Livia did her best to protect her little sister on the long voyage to the United States but wasn't always able to, which she feels overwhelming guilt about, and was separated from her once reaching the U.S.

This is a story of horror and of vengeance. Livia grows up in a monstrous household but perseveres, gaining the skills she needs to triumph over the darkness in her life and to start wreaking some vengeance for herself, her sister, and other abused children.

This was a tortuous book to read because I know enough of the world to know that it's all too possible and very probable that similar stories to Livia's happen daily around the world.

In many ways this book reminded me of some of Andrew Vachss' earlier books - and that is high praise in my opinion since Vachss has been writing about, and fighting, child abuse for many years.

Do be prepared. Child trafficking and child abuse are horrible and author Eisler doesn't sugarcoat what happened to Livia and others in this story.

The book is well written and I felt very close to Livia's character (which was horrifying at times) and was cheering her on throughout the book.

Bleak, But Rewarding, Livia Lone Is Eisler's Best Book Yet

Livia Lone may be the darkest, and most accomplished, book from Barry Eisler yet. I’ve been a long-time reader of Eisler’s work, and a big fan of his series character, John Rain, but early on into his latest I found myself already needing more Livia Lone books. It may be heretical, but as much as I love Eisler’s mournful assassin, if, for whatever reason, we never hear from John Rain again, I’ll be OK as long as there’s plenty more of Livia Lone to fill the gap.

Livia is a tragic, tortured, and psychologically fascinating character. She’s also incredibly strong and capable, both mentally and physically, and is a protector at heart. Sold into slavery alongside her sister by her parents, Livia and Nason are shipped across the ocean from Thaliand to the USA, and separated along the way. Although Livia was rescued and adopted, the whereabouts of her sister are a mystery that has driven her for more than a decade, and she now works a police detective in the sex crimes division of Seattle PD. She also has some less than legal extracurricular activities targeting rapists.

Right from the get-go, Eisler tackles rape culture and male privilege with an appropriately seedy and disturbing examination of a would-be rapists mindset, and had me instantly rooting for Livia.

Although Lone metes out some incredibly satisfying vigilante justice, Eisler never fails to shy away from the grotesqueness of the world she inhabits. This is not a feel good read, and much of the book made me downright uncomfortable and disgusted. Livia Lone is absolutely brutal, and oftentimes quite graphic, in its depictions of human trafficking, violence, child abuse, and rape. The streaks of hope that do sparingly exist herein are fueled by revenge, and Livia’s willingness to overcome whatever obstacles are put in her way. While she may get beaten down, she refuses to be defeated, even at a young age. A dragon resides within her, and when she lets it loose, woe be to anyone stupid enough to get in her way.

Livia Lone is stark and uncompromising, bleak but rewarding. Like his titular heroine, Eisler does not pull any punches here, and although it often left me despairing for humanity I think it’s a better book for it. And Livia, herself, is a heroine that I need much more of.

I don't normally write reviews but after finishing Livia Lone by Barry Eisler I feel absolutely compelled to. The book is an absolute stunner. I'm sure most people know the plot so I'm not going to delve into that. I am going to say though that Livia Lone is my favorite protagonist in years. The book is sometimes difficult to read. What happens to Livia and her sister is brutal and leaves you at times exhausted. It must be written this way because it's imperative that you feel the horror that is put on Livia. People have compared her to Lisbeth Salander (a great character in her own right) but I think Livia demands her own space and time. I also don't see this as a book of vengeance but a crusade for justice. The hell that is put on this young person and the fact that she comes out of it with a moral compass that you also believe in is a tribute to her and the writer. It's very obvious that Barry Eisler has done an enormous amount of reasearch and it's an important book in that it also attempts to educate the reader. I will follow Barry Eisler and Livia Lone down any path or road they choose. I truly hope that this is a first in a long running series.
