About the Author
Doug Hall is an artist who as been working in video and related media since 1970. His work has been shown at major museums in North America and Europe, and is included in public and private collections. He is chair of the department of performance/video at the San Francisco Art Institute, where he has been a faculty member since 1980.
Sally Jo Fifer has a Bachelor of Arts in art history from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master's in communication from Stanford University. She is Executive Director of the Bay Area Video Coalition, a national arts/technology access and training center, helping artists produce programming ranging from video and installation art to performing-arts documentation.

The Book, The Guide, The Video Art Bible

Illuminating Video was the quintessential video art guide when it appeared on the scene. This book is personal, critical, and a must for any media enthusiast/maker. The list of artist's is huge, as is the scope. Illuminating Video is basically a collection of essays, even art itself as in the case of Gary Hill? It was(and maybe is still) the best video art guide available--from the maker's themselves. One couldn't ask for a better introduction to the medium. The writing is intelligent, thought provoking, awe inspiring. Illuminating Video is a great reference, and belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in video art period. If you like essays from a first-hand artist's Illuminating Video: An Essential Guide to Video Artperspective, this comes highly recommended. There is not a lot of good writing about video art, and this one cuts to the chase. For me, this is the Bible for video art...

publishing strangeness

THis book was published in 1990, the 2005 1st edition date is wrong and confusing. THat's why that review siting it's ignorance of 1990's video art is funny. It hadn't happened when they published it. The 2005 date confused me, thought it was a new edition until i got my copy out and looked at the back page. copyright 1990 1st edition. All the articles it contains are all published before 1990 as well. Don't buy this if your looking for relevant info from post 1990. you won't find it here.
