Nice Overview, but how do you view the video clips?
By AKgirl 85
I got this for my "Intro into Education" class. This is okay as far as a textbook goes--of course, way too high priced, but that is the way with any required text. I thought the authors did a fine job of outlining all the basics of teaching, and found most of the material (especially the case studies) very interesting and thought provoking. The book touched on many topics, including possible pitfalls, legal rulings and court cases, standards, the history of education, job opportunities, professional development, the role of the teacher, educational philosophies, etc. One feature that especially interested me was the TechSource Video clips. I am interested in seeing how other educators manage their classrooms, employ certain techniques, and help their students to succeed. The book did not say how to view these clips at all (or I missed it if it did). Do I need to purchase an extra key card or something to do this? You would think that for the price it would be included! Anyway, if anyone knows where I need to go or what I need to do to watch these videos, please let me know! Thanks!

I ordered this because I needed it for one of the classes I was in . This arrived on time and was covered in bubble wrap. There were no bends or rips in it so that was great ! I would say that it is way too expensive but I guess you will have that with any school book you need .

Positive Realism, by Maurizio Ferraris

Positive Realism could be seen as the "sequel" to Maurizio Ferraris' Manifesto of New Realism and Introduction to New Realism. The focus here is the other side of unamendability: a notion, described in his previous books, according to which reality is "unamendable", it cannot be corrected at will. This "resistance" of the real is what ultimately tells us that, in opposition to the claims of post-Kantian philosophy, the world is not a result of our conceptual work: if it were so, our power over reality would be much greater. Now, the often disappointing limits that the real sets against our expectations are also a resource: and this is the key point of the present book. Things exist, and therefore undoubtedly resist us, but in doing so they offer affordances, resources, opportunities. And that the greatest opportunity, which underlies all the other ones, is the fact that we share a world that is far from liquid: on the contrary, it provides the solid ground on which everything rests, starting from our happiness or unhappiness.

Recommended Thinking
By Chauncey
Short, sharp, and sure to enlighten, this book takes a no-non-sense approach to explaining why we should be positive about the reality we exist in. This was the first I've about Positive Realism, and I feel thoroughly introduced to a logical philosophy. As a solipsist existentialist, this provided me with ample food for thought.

Need more profound discussions of other approaches and its relations with neuroscience discourse
By Dean Corso
From one of the thinkers prominent in hermeneutics, I think that to make this turn to a new realism requires a reflection on what happen with hermeneutics after this and how it relates with social neuroscience in a non reductionist way, for example in relation to topics such as perception and intentionality a la Searle, a more profound analysis of the differences with the views of radical realist and the approach of Marcus Gabriel 'No World', and everything else exist, philosophy.

    fair text...
    By andre
I had a chance to flip through this atlas ( I was looking for a quick reference in view of reviewing
CATs & MRIs with a USMLE slant). The text is system based, the lay-out straightforward (there are CAT sections & numbers filling up anatomic structures). There are few didactic diagrams, image quality on the other hand is good so basically this stimulates the student to get acquainted
swiftly with CATs. Ultrasounds are also good quality ( encouraging for beginners..).Joints pics and angiograms fair (latter not always).Nuclear medicine section a bit "oldy".
Studentconsult online allows pathology tutorials review.

I lost this book and bought it a second time because I love it
    By unorthoDoc
Great atlas for me starting out my radiology training. High quality images of radiographs, CT, MRI, angio, fluro, and US. Has multiple modalities in many slices, and adult vs child images which is nice. I wish the book wasn't so large, makes it a little hard to fit in my bag.

Very detailed. Useful for my imaging class.
    By Kut Shargul
I am using this book for by Image-based Anatomy class and I must say I would not be able to survive the class without it. The picture sequence is very clear and the writer provides appropriate number of images for each scan plane. The information given is accurate. Sometimes, looking at sequences of picture gives you a much better learning experience than looking at a real moving sequence MRI/CT since you actually have a chance to digest information and observe every detail of the picture.

Some cons: I would appreciate a more detailed labeling for the pelvis and the lower limb part. Sometimes, the labeling is inconsistent. I would prefer the author using femoral head through the book instead of switching back and forth between head of femur and femoral head, for example. (I can't recall specific examples right now, but there are such inconsistencies in the book, which is really minor and does not obstruct your understanding at all.)

Overall, a great book that I would recommend to anyone who is studying medical imaging.

Patient H.M.: A Story of Memory, Madness, and Family Secrets, by Luke Dittrich

“Oliver Sacks meets Stephen King”* in this propulsive, haunting journey into the life of the most studied human research subject of all time, the amnesic known as Patient H.M., a man who forever altered our understanding of how memory works—and whose treatment raises deeply unsettling questions about the human cost of scientific progress. For readers of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks comes a story that has much to teach us about our relentless pursuit of knowledge.

    *Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST

In 1953, a twenty-seven-year-old factory worker named Henry Molaison—who suffered from severe epilepsy—received a radical new version of the then-common lobotomy, targeting the most mysterious structures in the brain. The operation failed to eliminate Henry’s seizures, but it did have an unintended effect: Henry was left profoundly amnesic, unable to create long-term memories. Over the next sixty years, Patient H.M., as Henry was known, became the most studied individual in the history of neuroscience, a human guinea pig who would teach us much of what we know about memory today.

Patient H.M. is, at times, a deeply personal journey. Dittrich’s grandfather was the brilliant, morally complex surgeon who operated on Molaison—and thousands of other patients. The author’s investigation into the dark roots of modern memory science ultimately forces him to confront unsettling secrets in his own family history, and to reveal the tragedy that fueled his grandfather’s relentless experimentation—experimentation that would revolutionize our understanding of ourselves.

Dittrich uses the case of Patient H.M. as a starting point for a kaleidoscopic journey, one that moves from the first recorded brain surgeries in ancient Egypt to the cutting-edge laboratories of MIT. He takes readers inside the old asylums and operating theaters where psychosurgeons, as they called themselves, conducted their human experiments, and behind the scenes of a bitter custody battle over the ownership of the most important brain in the world.

Patient H.M. combines the best of biography, memoir, and science journalism to create a haunting, endlessly fascinating story, one that reveals the wondrous and devastating things that can happen when hubris, ambition, and human imperfection collide.

    Praise for Patient H.M.

“An exciting, artful blend of family and medical history.”—The New York Times

“In prose both elegant and intimate, and often thrilling, Patient H.M. is an important book about the wages not of sin but of science.”—The Washington Post

“Spellbinding . . . The fact that Dittrich looks critically at the actual process of scientific investigation is just one of the things to admire about Patient H.M.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Patient H.M. tells one of the most fascinating and disturbing stories in the annals of medicine, weaving in ethics, philosophy, a personal saga, the history of neurosurgery, the mysteries of human memory, and an exploration of human ego.”—Sheri Fink, M.D., Pulitzer Prize winner and author of Five Days at Memorial

“Dittrich explores the limits of science and the mind. In the process, he rescues an iconic life from oblivion. Dittrich is well aware that while we are the sum of what we may remember, we’re also at the mercy of what we can forget. This is classic reporting and myth-making at the same time.”—Colum McCann, author of Let the Great World Spin

“An exciting, artful blend of family and medical history.”—The New York Times

“In prose both elegant and intimate, and often thrilling, Patient H.M. is an important book about the wages not of sin but of science. It is deeply reported and surprisingly emotional, at times poignant, at others shocking. . . . A scintillating book, infused with humanity.”—The Washington Post

“Spellbinding . . . The fact that Dittrich looks critically at the actual process of scientific investigation is just one of the things to admire about Patient H.M.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Astonishingly insightful . . . A fascinating story in its own right to anyone interested in the history of modern science’s attempts to understand the causes of mental illness along with the many botched attempts to treat it . . . [Patient H.M.] is indeed about memory, madness, and family secrets and, in that sense, about the paths that shape the core of the self, in each and every one of us.”—Psychology Today

“Beautifully told . . . a book that will rank with Rebecca Skloot’s The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks in the realm of outstanding medical ethics narratives.”—Associated Press

“Dittrich’s account raises entirely new questions about the way in which the research on H.M. was conducted—and about the conclusions that have long been incorporated into our understanding of memory.”—New York Magazine

    “Remarkable.”—Wired

“Oliver Sacks meets Stephen King in a piercing study of one of psychiatric medicine’s darker hours. . . . A mesmerizing, maddening story and a model of journalistic investigation.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“At the heart of this breathtaking work . . . is [Luke] Dittrich’s story of his complicated grandfather, his mentally ill grandmother, and a long-held family secret, with Molaison stranded ‘where the past and the future were nothing but indistinct blurs.’”—Publisher’s Weekly, starred review

“The machinations of scientists and researchers—their personality and ambition, power and hubris—are of equally vital (and cautionary) importance in Dittrich’s unusual and compelling mix of science and family history.”—Booklist, starred review

“Patient H.M. tells one of the most fascinating and disturbing stories in the annals of medicine, weaving in ethics, philosophy, a personal saga, the history of neurosurgery, the mysteries of human memory, and an exploration of human ego. A monumental contribution to our understanding of medical research, and of ourselves, Patient H.M. is sweeping, meticulous, and seamless—with an ending that, like the best of scientific investigations, challenges everything that came before it.”—Sheri Fink, M.D., Pulitzer Prize winner and author of Five Days at Memorial

“In Patient H.M., Luke Dittrich explores the limits of science and the mind. In the process, he rescues an iconic life from oblivion. Dittrich is well aware that while we are the sum of what we may remember, we’re also at the mercy of what we can forget. This is classic reporting and myth-making at the same time.”—Colum McCann, author of Let the Great World Spin

“Luke Dittrich has achieved something remarkable in Patient H.M. This book succeeds on every level: as a fresh look at the most famous patient in medical history, as an exposé of our dark history of psychiatry and neurosurgery, and, most powerfully, as a deeply personal investigation into the author’s past. And yet it’s still a page-turner that reads like a thriller. It deserves a spot next to the great medical histories The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, The Ghost Map, and The Emperor of All Maladies.”—Susannah Cahalan, author of Brain on Fire

“It felt as if I read this book in one breath. Patient H.M. is a fascinating, powerful investigation, a matryoshka doll of nested stories about the past and present, remembering and forgetting. Luke Dittrich’s quest to understand the amnesic patient who taught the world so much about memory leads him to the shoals of his own family tragedy and an ending that will break your heart. But it’s his beautiful unfolding of the story, the art of his sentences and reportage, that you’ll never forget.”—Michael Paterniti, author of The Telling Room

    Great book written in anger
    By Constant Reader
After an okay career in adventure journalism for popular magazines, Luke Dittrich has produced his first book, the story he was born to write. Dittrich comes from an aristocratic American family that had some dark secrets. His grandfather Scoville was an evangelistic exponent and practitioner of prefrontal lobotomies during the 1950s; his grandmother was a remarkably independent woman before she married her dashing, philandering husband. The quiet "Bam Bam," as Luke and his siblings called her, had a breakdown early in her marriage to Scoville; after various forms of shock treatment she was lobotomized, perhaps by Scoville himself.

Scoville's biggest case, Dittrich learned, was a lobotomy on the epileptic Henry Moulaison. His drill went too far, and Moulaison, known in brain literature as Patient H.M., lost all his present-tense memory. He was studied by many people, especially by Suzanne Corkle, who coincidentally lived across the street from Dittrich's family when they were children.

Yes, Dittrich had a story to tell, but Corkle would not share her notes on Patient H.M. with him; she was writing her own book. Anger, anger, anger. It drives Dittrich's story. This book is a great read.

Bedouin, Settlers and Holiday-Makers: Egypt's Changing Northwest Coast, by Soraya Altorki, Donald P. Cole

Forces imposed by the twentieth century--modernization, globalization, the politics and economics of nation--have become so great that major changes in the old ways have had to take place for the sake of survival. The arid regions impose strict limits upon human existence and activity. And yet by respecting those limits, the flourishing and stable culture of these regions has for centuries been sustained. In the last thirty years, however, the forces imposed by the twentieth century--modernization, globalization, the politics and economics of nation--have become so great that major changes in the old ways have had to take place for the sake of survival.
Egypt's northwest coast, where meager coastal rains have supported a sparse but thriving population of Bedouin, has recently seen the arrival of settlers from the Nile Valley, accustomed to a very different way of life and production, and hordes of tourists whose "empty, silent structures" have effectively turned the most productive strip of the coastal range into an artificial desert. This study documents the great accommodations that have taken place to ensure the arid rangelands of the northwest coast continue to be viable for the demands of human existence imposed on them.
"A main thesis of this study," the authors write, "is that change in the northwest coast of Egypt has strong parallels in other arid regions of the wider Arab world; and specific comparisons are made to change underway elsewhere--especially regarding the transformation of Arab nomadic pastoralist production to a new form of ranching, and the related changes of sedentarization and the monetization of most aspects of livelihood."

    Balanced Perspective on Arab Life
    By Charlotte A. Hu
I studied under Dr. Soraya Altorki in Egypt and what struck me most about the first woman from Saudi Arabia to receive a PhD and her's from a Western university -- Harvard was that she seemed open to all ideas and balanced in her critique of Western and Arab cultures, of gender distinctions and of social classes. This all seemed in contrast to the rumors that she hailed from a wealthy, upperclass family and that she was a "feminist." This feminist label placed on her seemed odd to me as during one lecture, she explained that any, ANY definition of either gender automatically cages the opposite gender, limiting the potential of the individual who happens to be that gender. She used emotion and tenderness as an example, explaining that if we define this as the exclusive right of women, we push social pressure against a man's right to enjoy the simple pleasures of watching his child's first steps or throwing a ball to his son in a park.

She demonstrates her open analysis of how our social pressures develop us in this description of how the geographical and weather elements of desert life interact with and generate many of the social rules of life for the Bedouin culture. She's a fascinating and delightful lecturer, author and person.

Unlike Edward Said, she doesn't seem to be an Arab apologist. Rather than apologize for the elements of Arab and desert culture, she simply explores how and why decisions might be rational decisions. Once, during class, she asked us, is it really necessary that marriage be as it is in the Western context that a man serve all social, emotional and spiritual needs to his wife? Or could that extreme pressure be the cause for many divorces and might it be a healthier relationship to divide the burden of so many diverse needs of the individual to other family members, like sisters, aunts and cousins?

As with this book, she never definitively declared that one answer was necessarily valid. She simply proposed that a broader range of possible options might be worth consideration as we mold and shape our lives. Above all else, she urged us to consider the unwritten, often unspoken rules of our lives that we had always considered universal -- to re-examine what might have been urban myths and debunk them until we can see clearly what we do and why we do it.

This case study takes a closer look at why a rather alien culture does what they do, but she uses such studies to help her studies reflect on our own lives and on the limitations we place on our lives and look for a new inner freedom of thought.

    Interesting case study
    By Seth J. Frantzman
This study examines the exploitation and development of the western desert area of Egypt, concentrating on the town of Marsa Mutrah, whose population has exploded in the last fifty years, and thecoastal zone between Alexandria and Libya. One hundred years ago few settled people lived here. In the 19th century small numbers of Greeks, Armenians and others immigrated from Alexandria and then later larger numbers of Nile Valley peasents arrived. Meanwhile the bedouin tribes in the region became increasingly sedenterized.

This book explores the interplay betweent the government and the bedouin and development. THere are studies of sedenterization and land issue struggles. The last section examined the role of mostly Egyptian tourists and exclusion of bedouin from many industries.

The tragic part of this study is that for some reason the conclusion includes a diatribe against the 'west' and Israel. It blames Israel and the west for the problems of the region. It claims the west and the Second World War brought ideas of 'modernity' to the area and thus destruction and globalization. But the study didnt mention this and it seems merely a political jab. The implication that Israel somehow affected the western bedouin because Egypt was 'forced' to build military bases on nomad's lands is completely far fetched.

I am really bad about writing reviews
    By Emily
I am really bad about writing reviews, I never get around to doing it, tho I at least always try to rate all the books I read.
But after reading a few negative reviews about this author and her books, I actually felt the need to write this one.
I'm not a nurse, and I don't work directly in the ER, but I do work in the laboratory (and have more than a few friends that deal with the craziness of the emergency room). So for someone who knows how it can be, I think these books are fantastic. I'm actually kind of addicted to all of Kerry's books. I have seen some reviewers talk about her "bad language" or "inappropriate stories", but hello...its "REAL stories from a small-town ER", not "Edited for content stories from a small-town ER". As for privacy, she states in the beginning of all of her books that things are changed to protect the privacy of those involved in any story. The same thing every author does when writing a memoir type book.
Alright, I know this review is now sounding more like a defense for the author, than a review of the book, and I apologize for that. But if you work in a hospital (especially nurses and ER employees), or you love medical memoir stories, then you will love these books! An extremely entertaining, quick read.

    Another doozy!!!
    By anonymous
As usual, I loved this book. I know you asked for follow-up if any misprint or mistake is found. Near the end of the stories, in the one about the guy who was high on something, and claimed he saw a Minotaur in his bedroom, you stated, or the misprint did that his ETOH level was 10.1. Therefore he was not drunk on alcohol. I thought this was funny, knowing what it should have been......anyway, Kerry, keep the books coming and I will continue to read them, thanks.

KERRY DOES IT AGAIN! WHOO HOO!
    By Kindle Customer
These books were SUPPOSED to help me sleep....Not so much! They're too interesting to put down.
I had no idea, nor appreciation for what the "Registration Lady" did, but now, my whole perspective has changed. In fact, although I've been sick a bit, cancers, etc, I've always been cordial to Admissions.
As a retired cop, I've seen the ugliness of many people and I believe my self-professed "Long Fuse" would be snipped to the size of a matchstick. So before you come hell "FIRE IN THE HOLE!" I'd have smacked that teenage Bible Bully upside the head, thus ending a two, three-day maximum career.
Last Sunday, I was Squaded (yes, I made that word up) to a small Ohio Hospital with chest pain and difficulty Breathing.
Unlike our Bible Bullies, I really am a Christian and this happened just as I pulled up too late for church after detours took Mr, I think through Wyoming. The Medic nailed my IV entourage route first try. WOW! That NEVER HAPPENS. I cheered too soon.
The needed a second one for a specific test. 25+ misses. and blown veins later (had to be a 20 gauge, one FINALLY made it in! I have a high pain tolerance, so while three were working at once, I grew USED TO IT!
In report, I was described as 52yo Female, great makeup, very funny. I was very flattered. My point is, sorry, this isn't about me, I got to HEAR a LOT of screaming and yelling while I was being turned into a sieve. (Post note, that 2nd IV was...wait for it...NEVER USED! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!
Poor Kerry, she's underpaid if she's making six figures! No one should take that kind of abuse. At least as a cop, my "customers" we're always wrong and I COULD lose my temper! She has to play nice all the time. Pass the Demerol!
I've never seen anything borderline racist or hear her put someone down, but PEOPLE, YOU TRY AND DO HER JOB! You wouldn't last 5 minutes!
KERRY, I hope these books are great therapy for you and make you piles of cash!
Pray for the too big ascending aortic aneurysm they found, and I just have to wonder " Which hospital do you work in?"

Please, keep 'em coming and God Bless You!

The Mirror of the Self: Sexuality, Self-Knowledge, and the Gaze in the Early Roman Empire, by Shadi Bartsch

People in the ancient world thought of vision as both an ethical tool and a tactile sense, akin to touch. Gazing upon someone—or oneself—was treated as a path to philosophical self-knowledge, but the question of tactility introduced an erotic element as well.  In The Mirror of the Self, Shadi Bartsch asserts that these links among vision, sexuality, and self-knowledge are key to the classical understanding of the self.

Weaving together literary theory, philosophy, and social history, Bartsch traces this complex notion of self from Plato’s Greece to Seneca’s Rome. She starts by showing how ancient authors envisioned the mirror as both a tool for ethical self-improvement and, paradoxically, a sign of erotic self-indulgence. Her reading of the Phaedrus, for example, demonstrates that the mirroring gaze in Plato, because of its sexual possibilities, could not be adopted by Roman philosophers and their students. Bartsch goes on to examine the Roman treatment of the ethical and sexual gaze, and she traces how self-knowledge, the philosopher’s body, and the performance of virtue all played a role in shaping the Roman understanding of the nature of selfhood. Culminating in a profoundly original reading of Medea, The Mirror of the Self illustrates how Seneca, in his Stoic quest for self-knowledge, embodies the Roman view, marking a new point in human thought about self-perception.

Bartsch leads readers on a journey that unveils divided selves, moral hypocrisy, and lustful Stoics—and offers fresh insights about seminal works. At once sexy and philosophical, The Mirror of the Self will be required reading for classicists, philosophers, and anthropologists alike.

    Review
"A dazzling book with a broad field of vision, offering important new insights into Roman cultural psychology. . . . Bartsch commands the field of classics in its entirety, moving from an expert summary of ancient optical theory to a careful analysis of Lucretian poetry, elucidating philosophical subtleties and inserting notes of textual criticism along the way. Her fluent and carefully argued exposition, however, eases this compelling erudition." (Bart Van Wassenhove Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2006-11-28)

"A brilliant and thought-provoking study of the role of mirrors and mirroring in ethical thought. While drawing the proper distinctions between ancient and modern understandings of the mirror, self-mirroring and, indeed, the self, Bartsch cannot help reminding us that ancient conceptions have not been jettisoned wholesale in the march of history. Her book makes stimulating reading for anyone interested in the drama of the ethical life, now and then." (William Fitzgerald Times Literary Supplement)

"A very original, interdisciplinary study centred on ideas and images of selfhood in the first century AD. . . . Bartsch's study is, by any standards, a remarkable achievement, illuminating in its insights and linkages and challenging in its probing of received ideals. It is also written with an engaging combination of critical intelligence and wit, and the book itself is beautifully presented." (Christopher Gill Phronesis)

"Any reader who enters into a dialogue with her ambitious and challenging book will leave it the wiser." (Mark Golden Classical Bulletin)

"This text is complicated, but keeps the attention of the reader; intense and dense, but not monotonous; abstract and rarified, but a cautious and methodical reading overcomes these qualities. This book will be of interest to a wide variety of people intrested in ancient Greece and Rome.' (Edmund P. Cueva Canadian Journal of History)

"[A] thoughtful and thought-provoking study. And although the triad of sexuality, self-knowledge and the gaze seems a somewhat awkward partnership at times . . . the work as a whole offers some valuable new insights into ethics, erotics and optics in the ancient world." (Genevieve Lively Classical Review)

This is an excellent book on Ancient Roman and Greek Philosophy over the ocular metaphor in relation to the self, lover and community. This is one of my favorite go to books over the dynamics of gaze and it covers a wide range philosophers other than Socrates, Plato and Aristotle.
