Sections include material on the structure of eukaryotic chromosomes, the control of the cell cycle, initiation of transcription in eukaryotes, alternative splicing in the production of mRNAs, modern molecular screens for the isolation of mutants and investigation of genetic relationships by mitochondrial DNA analysis. The book also includes expanded coverage of mapping genes in human chromosomes. For readers with a limited background in biology or chemistry.

About the Author
Peter J. Russell received his B.Sc. in Biology from University of Sussex in 1968 and his Ph.D. in Genetics from Cornell University in 1972. He then joined the Biology faculty of Reed College in 1972 where he is currently Professor of Biology. Russell teaches an upper-division genetics and molecular biology lecture/laboratory course, the genetics section of the introductory biology course, an advanced seminar course in yeast virology, and advises senior thesis research students. He is also the author of a number of successful genetics textbooks.He is currently studying the molecular genetics of the replication of double-stranded (ds)RNA viruses found in budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The research goals are to define in vivo the cis-acting sequences that are required for viral RNA packaging into capsids and for genome replication, and to identify and characterize any yeast gene products required for virus propagation. His earlier research involved Neurospora rRNA synthesis and the organization of and regulation of the number of ribosomal RNA genes, and nitrogen metabolism in the pathogenic dimorphic yeast Candida albicans.

Kostof writes: "The Cappadocian carver-architect was not inhibited... by statics or the nature of materials. His structure stood, a monolith, before he started to work on it. And he could cut into this monolith quickly, effortlessly. It might take a single man about a month to carve out a large room of two to three thousand cubic feet. Loads and thrusts were negligible. One was free to try any structural symbol with little concern for structural safety. Cupolas could bubble from flat ceilings, or be placed over square bays by means of the most cavalier transition elemenis. No shape need be perfect: extemporaneous geometry is everywhere the rule. Wall lines sag, one half of an arch doesn't quite match the other, carefree deviations, here and there, mark the general outline of the building.

Following an account of the region, its environmental, political, and religious history, the author discusses in detail the building types and painting programs in the context of their creation--answering such questions as what was the nature of monasticism in Cappadocia, and who were the builders, the artists, their patrons? The author was born and educated in Turkey, and his personal knowledge of the monuments is a convincing factor in his handling of chronological and stylistic uncertainties. Throughout, Kostof's mind's eye never leaves the total environment, observing the inseparability of landscape, buildings, paintings, and the ritual that informs them.

In Cappadocia, a bleak and relatively barren section of south central Turkey, nature has provided a moonscape environment replenished with a wild and at times bizarre array of rock formation. It was in this remote, forbidding area that Byzantine monks from approximately 500 through 1200 A.D. created a strange, unreal world of rock-cut hermitages, monasteries, and churches. Kostof's study is comprehensive. It presents a catalog of the major rock-cut buildings and then painstakingly examines their architectural styles and the numerous styles of mural paintings that cover many of their walls and ceilings... the book beautifully conjures up a sense and a feel for the place, its man-made artifacts, and the beliefs of the men who lived there. The excellent, very enjoyable text is supplemented by many... black-and-white plates, and revealing line drawings of plans, elevations, and cross sections.

In a lunar, rocky region of central Turkey, visited by Saint Paul and converted early to Christianity, churches and monasteries were carved directly into the soft cliffs. The rockscape itself is eerie: there are photographs of strangely folded white hills and free-standing cone like formations eaten away by wind, with residues of harder rock perched on their summits like hats. The anonymous architecture hollowed out inside the slopes dates from the seventh century; itis fantastically resourceful in its response to a peculiar environment. In their chaste, no-nonsense design, MIT's books are consistently handsome, and this one is particularly so.

This book was so much fun to read

REVIEW: This book was so much fun to read! Before I say too much, let's dive into specifics. As always, the cons before the pros!

I knocked off a star due to how I felt the pacing of the story was. While I was constantly intrigued and was left wanting more, some parts felt a little info-dumpy and rushed. Right at the start of the novel, Cate almost immediately gets thrown into the action. I felt like this was rushed, and while I enjoy lots of action, I would have liked to gotten to know her a little bit better before having to worry about her well-being. There were also a few bits that felt cliche; the chosen one has to save the world. The use of time travel was so unique, and the author had so much to explore in the amazing Timesurfer world that could have been done differently.

However, I really enjoyed Cate's story! She is a total badass with extremely cool powers (and hair). She may be a little stereotypical in 21st century YA literature, but at times she had me giggling! She has lots of great dialogue, as do the rest of the unique cast of characters. All of the characters have their own voice and their own hilarious personalities. The plot arc, as well as the arcs of each character, were a great balance; the author wove developing the world and the characters excellently. This and the unique use of time travel blend together extremely well to make for an action-packed thrill ride! The author touches the rarely-used topic of time travel in a way that leaves the door totally open for the rest of the series, assuming there will be more. I hope so, especially after that ending!

Overall, this was a great debut novel and was so much fun to read! While some aspects could have been executed differently, it's easy to overlook them and to get a roller-coaster of a read!

My Thoughts
Timesurfers is hands down the best Indie Book I’ve ever read, it’s actually one of my favourites reads for 2015. It was such a quick read and just addictive, that you had to read the next chapter, immediately. The storyline of good verse evil sucks you in, then mysteries keep your attention and lastly, love interests have you wanting more.
The information about this new world and references we’re introduce to in Timesurfers flowed throughout the whole book, never too much information in one chapter. The whole concept of time travelling is always automatically placed in the sci-fi genre, but the way that Rhonda has written about time travelling was refreshing. Time travelling within the book is powered by magic and only Timesurfers can time travel. The catch is, they can only travel to the past. However, people from the future can bring people from the past to their present. Timesurfers always are gifted with extraordinary (and not so fancy) powers as well. Super hearing and healing are many of these super powers that Timesurfers have and develop.
The plot of the book was amazing. There was only one plot twist that I did see coming from a mile away but the rest were mind blowing. The inclusion of historical facts that make you think that this book may actually be a nonfiction was just incredible and mind boggling to read and understand. The definition of bad and good is so unclear that you don’t really know who the main character Cate, should side with. The storyline always had me biting at my fingernails and was so complex just like the characters.
The characters within the book are just disgustingly loveable, like, they’re all just amazingly interesting and I would never part with any of them.
One of these characters is the protagonist, Cate, at first a normal teen, but then later on it’s revealed she’s a time surfer. Cate is mentally and physically a baddass, sparingly. She is such a strong female character. I’d definitely put her up there with Kestrel from the Winner’s Curse and Yelena from Poison Study. Austin is such a simple and loveable character, just easily likeable. Austin is also one of Cate’s love interests which kind of felt like instant love but then, later on, we find out why these two characters have that weird connection. However, there’s Jonah, a ghost, a sexy untraceable bad guy who isn’t that bad at all who Cate (thinks she) likes. Throughout the book, we slowly get to unravel the layers of Jonah and oh boy, was the guy just… swoon worthy. At the end of the book, you’ll really only rooting for one guy because we find out that there is another girl in the equation, so no (real tough) love triangles here. You’ll find a team.
The Verdict
I loved Rhonda’s writing and her new and refreshing concepts of time travelling. The whole book reminded me of the mortal instruments plus time travelling but better. I easily awarded the book five stars. Next up is an interview with the genius author behind the book, Rhonda Sermon.

The whole concept of manipulating history had me very intrigued. Whilst it did not quite play out the way I was expecting, it was still really enjoyable. Timesurfers contained a lot more contemporary dramas/ conflicts than I was expecting.

For the first quarter of this novel, I was considerably confused. I’m not sure if I was a fan of how the concept was explained. If everything had been better explained and fleshed out early on, a lot of confusion down the track could have been avoided. HOWEVER, I think that is the risk with novels with such unique concepts such as this one. Try as I might, I haven’t been able to come up with a solution to this problem which leads me to believe that Sermon has introduced the world in the best way possible. Assuming this book is the first in a series, I believe that the other books will have a much smoother flow as the world in this novel has been set up appropriately with most concepts explained well.

Once I was properly emersed in the world, the plot was rather fun. Although I will say, the ending took me by surprise (unfortunately not in a good way) as I felt it was very sudden and came out of nowhere. That is a problem that I found regularity: it was unnecessarily complicated.

Some interesting character relationships were very fun to read about. Austin and Rose in particular. I found that all of the secondary characters were quite well thought out. It was Cate, the main character, that I found to be extremely typical of this particular genre. Although I can see potential for her character to be differentiated from others with future books. Jonah was probably my favourite character as he felt the most real to me.

Despite being a short book, Timesurfers had a rather slow pace. Due to the fact that every single word is of vital importance to the story, it took me a lot longer to read this than I had originally hoped. However, I found the whole book to be very consistent which was great to read. I can’t say that the descriptions in this book were lyrical, nor was the dialogue terribly thought-provoking or witty. But I can say that the complementary balance between the description of the dialogue was outstanding.

Timesurfers had some minor flaws but overall, it was really enjoyable with a great concept.

The role of the first book in a series is:

-introduce the world

-bring the characters to life

-spark the reader’s interest

-set up a complication

And:

-introduce character relationships

Im sure I’ve missed LOADS to those with a specially trained eye (aka— writers) but, from the ones I have listed above, Timesurfers ticks all of those boxes.

I am a huge fan of Danielle Steel and I found this to be one of her all-time best novels. I've read it probably 20 times and love it more each time. It's definitely a tear-jerker and once you pick it up, you can't put it down. I would recommend this to anyone who's as big a sap as I am.

Almost Too Intimate

From the first pages of Rabbit Hole, I felt as though I was intruding on the lives of the Corbett family. Abaire has a way of transporting you to the living room of a family in crisis. You are not invited in, but merely sitting too intimately close to the fragile characters Abaire has created. As a reader and or audience member, I sometimes found myself afraid to move for fear that one single change in the atmosphere would be the final straw to break the backs of this devastated family.

Many people find they feel safest and most secure within the doors of their own homes. That is where we can be our true selves, feel our deepest feelings, and not apologize for who we are. However, being an outsider sitting in and watching another family live out their most intimate moments is almost embarrassing. Feeling that you should look away or exit and leave them in whatever peace they can find. It is written so beautifully, you do feel uncomfortable reading and you do feel uncomfortable watching... But in the best possible way.

Each character is fully developed, rich, and alive. Abaire allows you to have a personal connection with each. It is a touching, rewarding, and devastating experience... And not one I would recommend missing.

"You should try to relax a little."

Dealing with the most traumatic event any parent can endure--the death of a child--David Lindsay-Abaire manages to involve his audience in the grieving process and illustrate how we all grieve differently and for different lengths of time. Despite the subject matter, this 2007 Pulitzer Prize-winning play is often extremely funny, setting up emotional contrasts between ironic humor and infinite sadness which make the loss of the child more poignant, without dissolving into bathos.

Danny, a four-year-old chasing his dog, has been struck and killed by a car driven by a seventeen-year-old driver, and the family is trying to cope with their grief. As the play opens, Becca, the child's mother, is folding the laundry--Danny's clothes--which she has just washed in preparation for giving them away. She has internalized her feelings, refusing group therapy, any religious counseling, and especially the advice of her overbearing mother. Her husband Howie goes to work, attends group therapy, becomes friends with some of the other grieving parents, and tries to coax Becca into becoming a wife again.

Among the other characters, Nat, Becca's mother, has all the pat answers, and she equates the loss of this child with her own loss of her adult son, something she insists on emphasizing to Becca. Izzy, Becca's sister, an off-the-wall case of arrested development, has been having an affair and is now pregnant, an eventuality with which Becca must now learn to cope, especially since Izzy has used Danny's death as an excuse for her irresponsible behavior. Jason, the seventeen-year-old driver of the car, is also trying to come to grips with the events, blaming himself, reliving every moment, searching for some sort of forgiveness which he is not sure he deserves.

As the characters interact, we see them as individuals, not just as participants in the terrible drama of their shattered world, but we also see that grief is not and cannot be a full-time activity. Many moments of humor make their lives more realistic and provide relief for the audience. As the eight months from Danny's death until the end of the play elapse, we see changes in all the characters, but the play ends (blessedly) without pat answers. Each character is different, reacting differently to the Danny's death, grieving their loss differently, and learning to cope differently. The audience, drawn into the events, will also react differently, respond to different characters in different ways, and imagine differently how they themselves would respond. A realistic, touching play of coping and life after tragedy.

Rabbit Hole is David Lindsay-Abaire's answer to the countless existing films profiting on an overdramatic and cloying rendition of tragedy. While the death of a child is a common theme among Lifetime films, Rabbit Hole deviates from your run of the mill tear-jerker in its thoughtful, nuanced portrayal of the grief a family experiences after the sudden death of their four year old son Danny, and the struggle they go through in attempting to carry on with their lives. Rabbit Hole is undoubtedly tragic, but not because Lindsay-Abaire spends the entire play hammering that fact home or having characters exclaim "Oh, look how sad I am", but because we're introduced to the characters themselves and all of their foibles and eccentricities. The characters' ordinariness endears them to the audience and we begin to sympathize with their plight. The grief is understated and subtle but ever-present as the characters go about their daily lives, as Nat rants about the "Kennedy Curse", Becca bakes desserts, Izzy (debatably) gets into bar fights, and Howie unsuccessfully tries to seduce his wife. So it hurts all the more when the characters grieve, because their grief is organic and the audience identifies with the characters as shown in Act 2, Scene 2 when Becca and Nat are cleaning out Danny's room, and Nat lingers on Danny's shoes. Becca quickly and methodically stops her, warning her to make it "Quick and clean, like a Band-Aid." Ultimately, it's the mundane nature of the characters and their lives that makes Rabbit Hole an extraordinary portrayal of grief and loss and life after tragedy.
