Well executed by the authors. Think about these things before purchase.

This was not an easy concept for the authors and product planners to execute. It's radically different than just assembling Legos from an instruction booklet. A lot of thought and effort went into the chain reaction concepts and resulting projects. The book layout, the security so that the parts actually arrive at the consumer, the durability of the non Lego paper components, the directions on how to fold the paper components etc, etc, etc. are thoughtfully done. I think they struck a very good balance so this would not cost an arm and a leg. Some might call it cheap (a few Lego pieces, a beautiful well laid out instruction book with nicely printed paper components) but I call it cost effective. A lot of what you're paying for here is in my opinion is the wow factor of the book and the well thought out concepts.

I supported my 7 year old grandson's effort to build the first project. My 5 year old grandson looked at what was involved and walked away I think because it looks complicated and the projects contain very few pieces. Both of them are very skilled Lego builders who pride themselves on their ability to throw lots of pieces together quickly. Does that sound familiar to you?

So... I think what motivates most young Lego builders is assembling lots of pieces quickly and having a relatively static object to play with when done. The chain reaction projects aren't that at all. They don't look like much -to an adult - when complete. They are challenging in my view mostly because of the need for precision alignment between the paper parts and the Lego motion actuators the kids assemble to create the Chain the Reaction. Once assembled and aligned, making it function can require trial and error, motivation to succeed, precision hand and eye coordination and patience. I think that doing the first project successfully might be a make or break point for this product. Failure would surely be a deterrent towards doing subsequent projects in the book so initial success seems very important at least for younger children. The greatest joy my grandson experienced (and it was great joy) was the moment the first project functioned properly for the first time after several complete and partial failures (just as his patience was wearing thin) and then joy again once the chain reaction was rehearsed and easily repeatable so as to show his parents without failure. Having achieved this first success he was excited about doing more projects. It remains to be seen what his long term interest level will be.
Yes.. This is radically different than just sticking prices together and success is not easy considering that the projects are minimalist in the total number of pieces. However I think the lessons and skills this product teaches are very important, worthwhile and noteworthy. Aside from the skills mentioned above this is also elementary physics of motion, weight, angle, momentum, etc. In summary, it appears that, assuming success along the way, the complicated chain reactions are fun for children to assemble, challenging to make fully, reliably functional and thrilling once they work for that first time. It's all good stuff!

Does not come with required pieces

The first project can be completed with included parts. The second project requires 4 2x1 bricks, 10 3x1 bricks, 6 4x1 bricks "from your collection". They say not to worry about matching colors or the fancy designs they show and yet I bet there's a good portion of kids used to following Lego instructions verbatim who will have a meltdown if they don't match.

How hard is it to find these bricks? I have an underbed storage container filled to the brim with the bricks from many, many Lego kits we've bought over the last 4 years. We don't have the bricks needed for the dominoes project.

Third project needs: 6 4x2 bricks; 6 8x2 bricks; 2 4x1 bricks, 4 2x1 bricks; 3 4x2 plates; 2 2x2 plates

Fourth project requires: 11 2x8 bricks; 1 2x8 plate; 3 2x4 bricks; 2 2x1 bricks; 3 2x3 bricks; 3 1x4 bricks; 3 2x4 plates; 1 2x3 plate; 5 1x4 plates; 3 1x6 plates

5th project requires: 1 1x4 tile (flat top); 1 slope brick that is 2x4 on bottom and slopes to 1x4 on top; 1 2x6 plate; 1 2x4 plate, 1 2x2 brick; 1 2x8 plate; 3 1x4 bricks, 4 2x8 bricks; random amount of other 1x? Bricks to build single stud wide walls to knock over

Best if You have An extensive Supply of LEGOS and Time to Gather parts

This book should have been turned into a LEGO set with all the pieces needed to complete each chain reaction. It includes everything need for the first reaction. The nine after that use mostly LEGOs from your collection. One could make each chain reaction, take it apart, then make the next. However we felt the point was to make a LEGO Rube Goldberg type reaction and wanted to keep each of the ten models together to explore the ways in which they could be combined. It was a pain gathering the pieces needed. It was interesting to learn a variety of cause and effect motions possible with LEGOs. If I would have known the work involved in gathering the pieces I likely wouldn't have bought this item. If you have a small LEGO collection, you likely won't have the pieces to keep all the reactions together. Some are basic bricks, but others are special pieces. Fun concept, could have been implemented better.

This is an older version and better in my opinion.

As a 20 year Al Anon, I bought this book and had it sent directly to someone I sponsor. I kept mine and have re-used it. One 4th step is not enough for the rest of your life. I copied each question and wrote the answer in my notebook. Or one could use the questions and answer them on your work processing package.

Another book I read and wanted my own copy

This book is well written and at times situations described are funny. Some parts amaze. It is somewhat educating on MPD/DID as well. I have read a lot of MPD/DID books and literature. I have seen some films and gone to professional lectures. This is one of my favorite books on the subject. I would say it is among the top 5.

This story had a sad ending. The system failed Billy Milligan. He was getting some help, then bad decisions were made and he was sent to an environment that failed him. After this book I learned more about this client online. He has lived free since...but still has brushes with the law. His life has improved but he still has attitude issues and also he thinks he is a expert on MPD/DID. He also thinks MPD/DID is extremely rare and thinks he can judge all other cases to judge if they are real or not. I feel he is misinformed. MPD/DID is not rare. I have been to professional lectures on this and I've met several other MPD/DID clients. There is no mistaking that they are MPD/DID. Billy Milligan isn't completely successful living freely in society. He has written another book since, but it was published in Japan and not available in the USA... nor is it in English. He enjoys being a celebrity of sorts, but also likes to live privately. I know he had some bad experiences with his therapy and has trust issues...but he can still benefit from more that can allow him to stay unmerged but heal from the bitterness he still holds and he can learn to cope and learn to trust again.

A Highly Engaging Account of a Victim of Multiple Personalities

I would not rave over this book; however, given my strong interest in multiple personalities, as well as my interest in human psychopathology, I found "The Minds of Billy Milligan" to be a highly engaging work to read. It was written by a fairly noted novelist, and he knows how to write a story that is fascinating to the reader.

This book is about a real-life case of multiple personalities, but the author undoubtedly included much in the way of additions to what actually happened, as well as suppositions about what respective personalities knew or were thinking.

Overall, I regard this book as the best one I've ever read on multiple personality disorders. I was a bit disappointed with a less-than-positive outcome of the story, since Milligan never was found capable of functioning successfully outside of a prison or a mental institution, once he'd been apprehended for crimes he committed. Since Milligan had been a very grave victim of child abuse, including rape by a foster parent, I'd hoped that he would be able to survive and overcome the horrific psychological damage inflicted upon him. However, at the time the book was completed, he was still stuck in a maximum-security mental institution for the criminally insane. Milligan was undoubtedly brilliant, and did very impressive artistic creations. However, he never managed to surmount the obstacles to an integrated and rewarding life outside an institution - at least, not at the time of the completion of the book.

For any person interested in a story of adventure by a brilliant mental patient - whether fictional or non-fictional - this real-life story of Billy Milligan should be a worthwhile read.

it wasn't easy to find a copy

I tead this book in high school & told a friend about it. She was very intrigued - she had never heard about ythe 'male Synil'. Since it was written 35 years ago, it wasn't easy to find a copy. With free 2 Day Prime shipping this was the best price by far. I teceived a brand new copy in a short amount of time.

Great guide that you will live by!

I recently travelled to Rome and like a good traveller, I wanted to have all my ducks in a row.
I made a list of everything I needed to bring and while reviewing this list, I noticed I did not have a travel guide. I promptly got on Amazon and looked up guides for Rome. This book was highly praised and pocket sized. SCORE!
I bought the book and waited eagerly for it's arrival.
Once it arrived, it thumbed through it but didn't really look at it since I knew the plane ride would be long and I'd have plenty of time.
When I finally opened and read the guide, I was surprised with the vast amounts of information that was in it.
There is a map that shows you all of the must see spots in Rome and how to get there.
There are more than 10 pages assigned to each section of the city like Vatican City, the Coliseum, the Roman Forum, and the art galleries.
Each section tells you not only the history of the area but also the best places to eat and the things to avoid.
There is a section with commonly used Italian phrases so you're not on your own in the city. Although, most people speak English, it is good to have some knowledge of the language for those who play dumb with tourists.
I kept this book with me every where I went so I would know the best places to eat and the places to avoid.
If you're looking to go to Rome, or any other city in Italy, Rick Steves' can sure help you out with these nifty books.
It's a great guide to have in a city that can swallow you whole.
*****PLEASE NOTE- If you're planning on going to Rome in September, it is extremely hot and muggy. There are water fountains where you can refill your bottle but they are few and far between. The prices of a beverage are ridiculous so bring your own bottle.
Vatican City and the Sistine Chapel are super packed no matter what time you go. Make sure you make a reservation to tour with a group so you do not have to wait in line for hours.
The only thing I noticed in the book that is slightly different is picking up tickets for the Coliseum tour. If you buy these tickets online in combination with the Roman Forum and Palestine Hill, you MUST pick these tickets up at the entrance to the forum. There is a box office over there and you have to have your print out. The people at Coliseum cannot and will not take a paper print out and there is no box office there. All of the tickets, even the Coliseum ones, have to be purchased at the box office at the Forum. Most of the people who do the tours are just that, tour guides, they do not know much about picking up tickets so if you ask them, they will either give you the run around or direct to you a completely different place altogether.
Also, if you're visiting any of the Art Museums, they are HOT!! Extremely, suffocatingly hot. I am not sure if that was just because it was so hot outside or if they keep it hot to preserve the art work but if you cannot stand the heat, you might want to avoid these museums. They also tell you to arrive 30 minutes early to check in but they only let you in about 5 minutes before your scheduled time and only allow you about an hour to tour the entire museum. The Borgehese Museum has a coat check and although they say it's mandatory, not many people check in their coats or bags so there is a lot of unauthorized photo taking by people who either don't speak the language or don't care that they are ignoring the rules.

Rick Steves is one of the most popular series of guides to travel. We were in Rome for 4 days this summer, and used the book as a quick reference guide. The organization of the book is much like the other guides. It is about 4.5 by 6 inches, 230 pages or so. The first pages of introduction gives a synopsis of the major tourist areas: Vatican City, North Rome, Pantheon, Trastevere, Ancient Rome, Pilgrim's Rome, South Rome, and Termini. The Daily Reminder gives a succinct overview of special hours for attractions on different days of the week. On Sundays, for instance, the Vatican Museums are closed. Many sights are closed on Mondays, including the Capitolini Museum, the Borghese Gallery, Ostia Antica, etc. The guide also lists major sights with its rating of importance: those with three triangles, likes the Colosseum, the Forum, the Vatican, and the Borghese Galleries, are rated three triangles for "Don't Miss."

The back of the book includes a detailed map of Rome with Metro stops. Romans rely less on the underground than on above-ground trams and buses. One of the huge short-comings of the guidebook is the lack of a bus map and schedule. The buses generally come every 15-25 minutes. It can be annoyingly hot in August to be waiting in full sun for the buses. The Roman bus stops have a detailed listing of the stops for each line, but it is impossible to figure out which buses to take unless you ask someone. Fortunately the Romans are such generous and friendly people that they generally help poor tourists out. The map of Rome is not very useful for walking. The smaller streets are not shown. The Trastevere area is not shown in entirety. There are free maps distributed in hotel lobbies that are superior to the one in the book.

The remainder of the book contains several walking tours of major sites: Colosseum, Forum, Pantheon, Night Walk across Rome, Vatican Museum, St. Peter's Basilica, the Borghese Gallery. In general, the tours hit the highlights of each sight, but few details are given. We traveled with children and were prepared for Museum Fatigue ("You promised, TWO churches only today," said my son). Therefore, for the best sights, we actually had private tour guides through a tour company. It was invaluable to our enjoyment.

Note: this is a brief and populist guide. It is good for an overview, but not for any kind of detailed historical or academic treatise of the major sights. For this kind of information, I recommend doing research before your trip on the internet, as each major sight has a website. As well, the Blue Guides will bring more life to the tours. The tour companies are expensive, but allowed us to bypass long, hot lines for the major attractions. Our tour guide was an archeologist who happened to be a great speaker. The children were vastly entertained, and she was familiar with all the SHADY spots on the tour.

We did not use this book for restaurant recommendations or hotels. We used a Tripadvisor city app: take the recommendations with a grain of salt, as they are not always unbiased.

So, why a guide book and not a smartphone app? Smart phone apps (maps, Tripadvisor, etc.) have an advantage in that your GPS location is available, and the distance to various sights can be accurately estimated. However, smartphones are difficult to see in the sun, and the information you want is not always easily searchable. It would be cool, for example, to wear Google Glass and have it link to Wikipedia. Great, but it's way cheaper to buy a $10 book.

Awesome guide - worth 10 stars

We just got back from Rome May 7. Rick Steve's Rome guide was an enormous help planning what to see & where to go - the ebooks are more convenient, carried my iPad everywhere. The book's map of the Sistine Chapel helped me to figure out what's what & where's where. The book's maps were easier to follow than the maps from the museums. He suggested buying tickets online to go to the Vatican & to get Roma Pass in Rome (not online) - I did & we bypassed the long lines to the Vatican & the Colosseum. The Roma Pass was well worth it for the metro. We went on a day trip to Ostia Antica - his map was way better than the one from the museum. I did our itinerary for the trip according to Rick's diamond ratings - just awesome, awesome guide. I also used his guide to go to Paris - awesome too.

It's been a good book so far

It's been a good book so far, it's really an introduction to the field so don't expect any really in depth articles but the articles presented give a great idea of the state of research and where current trends stand.

A Hodgepodge collection

This book is a bit strange. I was expecting it to be a 'standard' introductory textbook, thoroughly covering the basics of this field. Instead, it is a hodgepodge collection of published scientific papers and chapters from other books/sources. Some of these 'reprints' from other sources are quite interesting and worth reading. Overall, the book is just a collection of other people's work. I would buy the book again, but I would like to find a book that truly covers this fairly new topic/field from "beginning to end".

Basic, easy to read introduction to the state governemnt and politics. Provides a solid foundation to understanding the current state of politics and how we arrived at this point. Information is providing in interesting and relevant fashion, and is up-to-date with current politics (updated post-recall campaign).

A Great Primer on California's System

Having not grown up in California I was always a little in the dark as to how things operated in this State. However, when I picked this book up as part of a Political Science class I found myself much better off.

The book is short, which is really a good thing. Yeah, the author could have droned on about the minute detail of every aspect of California's government and political system, but she didn't. Rather, she laid out, in a concise fashion, an explanation of the governmental and political system in California that gives a person enough knowledge to understand what is going on around them and to make well informed decisions at the ballot box.

I would suggest this book for anyone who wants to be able to spend just a couple hours to understand the California system. This is also a great reference book to keep in the house.

You won't be disappointed.
